Fertőboz lies between the ridge of hills running along the southern shore of Lake Fertő and the lake’s reed beds. This location offers a distinctive starting point when choosing a destination: the landscape, a special journey on the museum railway and the town’s history offer different perspectives on a stay. You can consider whether you would prefer to plan a full-day cycling trip, experience the seasonal narrow-gauge railway or explore the town’s history.

Landscape, distant views and activity

The ridge of hills on the southern shore and the reeds shape the town’s setting in different ways. In good weather, the view from Fertőboz extends almost 60 kilometres to Bratislava. If you plan to take in this distant view, bear in mind that it depends on the weather. A paved footpath and cycle path runs through Fertőboz; it is not physically separated. Keep this in mind when planning your routes through the town.

The short cycling loop around Lake Fertő passes through Fertőboz and is designed as an excursion that can be planned for a day. The route is also recommended for groups of friends and families. Its full-day format makes it a focus in its own right, which you can take into account when planning your stay. Check local conditions before setting out.

Travelling on the Széchenyi Múzeumvasút

From April to October, the Széchenyi Múzeumvasút runs according to a timetable between Széchenyi Castle in Nagycenk and Fertőboz railway station. Its seasonal operating period gives the journey a clear place in the annual calendar. If you would like to include it in your stay, check the latest information and timetable in advance.

One special feature of the journey: under supervision, passengers can drive the small train’s locomotive themselves. At the end, they receive a certificate confirming their locomotive-driving skills. This means the museum railway offers passengers a special activity in addition to the journey between its two endpoints.

Local history on two scales

Fertőboz was owned by the Széchényi family for over 270 years. This long historical connection offers one way into the town’s history. Another, more tangible reminder can be found in the cemetery: the gravestone of Gemeindewiese Ádám, the first local priest, dates from 1781. Together, these two details offer different scales of history—a long period of ownership and a dated gravestone bearing a named individual.

Wider landscape setting

Within the wider destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron, Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park. The Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape encompasses Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake as well as a varied landscape of wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and lakeshore areas. The Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj cultural landscape was granted UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001.
