The Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist stands on Vitnyéd’s main thoroughfare. Another church history leads to Csermajor: the Chapel of Saint Emeric is located there, and Csermajor is administratively part of Vitnyéd. This makes it possible to distinguish a prominent landmark in the village from the history of its affiliated community.

The church on Vitnyéd’s main thoroughfare

The Church of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist stands beside the main road connecting Győr and Sopron. Its location on the main thoroughfare places it directly within Vitnyéd. Those interested in local cultural history can consider this connection separately from the history of the chapel in Csermajor.

The Chapel of Saint Emeric in Csermajor

The chapel’s history includes several events that took place at different times. It was commissioned by the Ujhelyi Imre Dairy Technical Secondary School; on 6 April 1936, it was consecrated by Dr. István Breyer, Bishop of Győr. In 1943, the Dairy Technical Institute enlarged the chapel. The following year, Bishop Vilmos Apor blessed it. The commission, first consecration, enlargement and subsequent blessing thus form a clear sequence from 1936 to 1944.

Culture in the wider Győr-Moson-Sopron destination

In the wider Győr-Moson-Sopron destination, the cultural range extends from monastic complexes to castle architecture. Pannonhalma Archabbey was founded in 996. The World Heritage property of the Archabbey and its natural surroundings includes the monastic complex, basilica and educational buildings, as well as the Chapel of Our Lady, the Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. Another architectural highlight is Esterházy Palace in Fertőd, an outstanding example of Hungarian Baroque-Rococo palace architecture. Scheduled buses run daily from the bus station in Győr to the main entrance of Pannonhalma Archabbey; check the timetable before planning your trip.

Landscapes and nature experiences in the region

The Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape combines wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and lakeshores; it also includes Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park. Its Hungarian part has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj cultural landscape was granted UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001. These details describe different aspects of the same regional landscape: its natural diversity, protected status and recognition as a World Heritage site.

Another landscape area is the 8,272-hectare Pannonhalma Landscape Protection Area. It encompasses two main areas: the Pannonhalma Hills and the calcareous sandy steppes of the Kisalföld. The hills consist of three roughly parallel ridges: Szemere, Csanak and Pannonhalma. From the Várhely lookout, the view extends northeast toward Sopron, Sopron-Bánfalva, Bécsi-domb, Lake Neusiedl and the Mosoni Plain.

A boat trip on Lake Neusiedl takes you by electric boat through reed channels and bays along the western shore. Along the way, you can observe aquatic wildlife, reed warblers, great egrets, purple herons and various ducks. Dates and booking conditions may change; check both before planning your trip.
