A 943-meter-long cycling route, four fishing lakes in the town center, and a bell tower with a history dating back to 1928 give Vámosszabadi some specific points of interest to explore. Nearby, Körtvélylapos adds to the local attractions with its diverse landscape of canals and plants. Broader natural and cultural heritage sites form part of the wider Győr-Moson-Sopron region destination and offer a distinct regional focus.
Cycling Route and Fishing Lakes in Vámosszabadi
In 2014, a 943-meter-long cycling route was opened in Vámosszabadi. It enabled locals and tourists to explore the area and its natural attractions by bicycle. Its length makes it suitable for a short, manageable ride. If you plan to use the route today, it is advisable to check its current condition in advance.
There are also four fishing lakes in the center. They offer a different focus from the cycling route: if you would like to include fishing in your stay, check access and fishing opportunities in advance. This allows you to consider the two local attractions according to different interests, without combining them into a single excursion offer.
Körtvélylapos and Its Plant Life
Near Vámosszabadi, southwest and west of the village, Körtvélylapos lies between canals. White willows, gray willows, black poplars and red dogwood grow along the canals. There are also floating and rooted aquatic plant communities, as well as protected marsh pennywort and marsh gladiolus. The local nature description identifies Körtvélylapos as the only place in Szigetköz where the protected marsh gladiolus has been recorded to date.
White water lilies, water roses, water mint and branched bur-reed are also common there. The combination of canal banks, trees and different aquatic plants gives this natural setting a character distinct from the cycling route in town. This distinction is useful when planning: Körtvélylapos is in the surrounding area, not in the center of Vámosszabadi.
Bell Tower and Local History
Two details at the Vámosszabadi harangláb, or bell tower, recall different periods. The bells currently there were made and installed in 1928. A memorial plaque to the Szabadi heroes who fell in the First World War was added to the bell tower during a renovation in the mid-20th century.
The bells and the plaque therefore represent two different historical references: the making and installation of the bells in 1928, and the commemoration of the fallen, added during a later renovation. Together, they offer a specific aspect of local history alongside the natural attractions of Vámosszabadi and Körtvélylapos.

These broad landscape attractions offer a distinct regional focus alongside the local attractions of Vámosszabadi.
Another area of cultural interest is Pannonhalma, where the Benedictine monastery was founded in 996. The World Heritage property of the Archabbey of Pannonhalma and its Natural Environment includes the monastery complex, basilica, educational buildings, Chapel of Our Lady, Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. Esterházy Palace in Fertőd is an outstanding work of Hungarian Baroque-Rococo palace architecture.
Scheduled buses run daily from Győr bus station to the main entrance of Pannonhalma Archabbey. Check the current timetable for your travel date. At Lake Neusiedl, an electric boat trip passes through reed channels and bays on the western shore; along the way, you can observe aquatic wildlife, reed warblers, great egrets, purple herons and various ducks.
