Öttevény can be explored through two distinct cultural and historical themes: the Evangelical Church and Földváry Castle. The castle also features a gallery building with an auction house and exhibition space, extending the story from a religious building to a structure with its own history and cultural significance.

Church, Castle and Different Building Periods

The Evangelical Church in Öttevény was built in 1929. Földváry Castle dates from the 18th century. Baron Miklós Földváry, one of Öttevény’s largest landowners, had it built for his wife. The different building periods give the town’s history a clear timeframe: here, a 20th-century church stands in contrast to a castle commissioned for personal reasons in the 18th century.

Földváry Castle includes a gallery building with an auction house and exhibition space. This additional structure expands the castle’s story to include auctions and exhibitions. Those interested in culture can distinguish between the history of the castle’s construction and the purpose of the gallery building, without conflating the two.

A Dated Event

The III. FÖLDVÁRY CASTLE DAYS – Blackberry Festival took place in Öttevény on 14 and 15 August 2026. The two-day program at the time featured cultural activities, concerts, family activities, gastronomic experiences and blackberry-themed attractions.

The Broader Győr-Moson-Sopron Destination

For a broader perspective beyond Öttevény, the wider Győr-Moson-Sopron destination offers its own cultural and landscape themes. Pannonhalma Archabbey is an example of the region’s monastic heritage: the Benedictine monastery was founded in 996. The World Heritage property includes the monastery complex, the basilica, educational buildings, the Chapel of Our Lady, the Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. This extensive monastic complex is thematically distinct from Öttevény’s church and castle history.

A specific bus connection is also part of this regional context: scheduled buses run daily from the bus station in Győr to the main entrance of Pannonhalma Archabbey. Check the current timetable before travelling.

Another distinctive landscape feature of the wider destination is the Pannonhalmi Landscape Protection Area. It covers 8,272 hectares and has two main areas: the Pannonhalma Hills and the calcareous sandy steppes of Kisalföld. The hills consist of three roughly parallel ranges: Szemere, Csanak and Pannonhalma. These names give the regional landscape a different character from the Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape.

The Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape includes Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shoreline areas. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park; the Hungarian part has been protected since 1977. The Fertő Landscape received UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001. An electric boat trip offers a way to explore the reed channels and bays on the western side of the lake; visitors may spot aquatic wildlife, reed warblers, great egrets, purple herons and various ducks. Dates and booking conditions may change, so it is advisable to check before making plans.
