Györ offers several ways to shape a stay: Baroque and religious architecture, routes through the city and along the rivers, and cultural and leisure activities. You can choose what to see based on your own interests, without needing to follow a set itinerary.

Baroque architecture, religious art and city history

The Carmelite Church, a Baroque building dating from the first half of the 18th century, stands on Bécsi kapu tér. A route favoured by locals leads from Dunakapu tér around Káptalandomb, along the castle wall and on to Bécsi kapu tér. The church is an architectural landmark at the end of this route.

In front of Kreszta-ház, the Jedlik-csobogó fountain commemorates the Benedictine monk Ányos Jedlik, who invented the soda-water bottle in Győr. Győr Cathedral preserves the reliquary bust of Saint Ladislaus, the miraculous image of the Weeping Madonna and the marble sarcophagus of Blessed Vilmos Apor. Alongside the buildings, these objects offer a distinct perspective on the city’s religious and artistic heritage.

The Neolog Synagogue is another notable historic building: it was built between 1868 and 1870. Together with the Carmelite Church, it reflects different architectural and religious histories, without requiring a single style to define your city walk.

River promenades and routes

Győr has developed river promenades along the Rába and the Mosoni-Duna. The riverside paths add a second focus to the city’s attractions: here, the rivers take centre stage rather than the buildings.

Nearby, the six-kilometre Holt-Rába nature trail lies close to Győr city centre, on the border of Gyirmót. The trail can be explored on foot, and part of the route is also suitable for cycling. This offers an alternative to the route from Dunakapu tér to Bécsi kapu tér, which passes through urban areas and along the castle wall.

Bringa Mánia Győr offers guided cycling tours through Győr and the surrounding area for individuals and groups. Tours must be arranged in advance; check current availability directly with the provider. This lets you choose between exploring on foot at your own pace and taking a guided tour arranged in advance.

Cultural programme and leisure activities

Győr’s established performing arts ensembles and institutions include the Győri Balett, the Győri Filharmonikus Zenekar, the Győri Nemzeti Színház and the Vaskakas Bábszínház. Performances and programmes vary. If you would like to combine your visit with a show, check the dates for your travel period.

The Xantus János Zoo in Győr is home to almost 150 animal species, with more than 900 animals. The numbers of animals may change over time.

A water park on a peninsula at the confluence of the Mosoni-Duna and the Rába has 21 indoor and outdoor pools, a children’s water area and a Japanese-style sauna world. The park also features a 32-metre slide tower shaped like a soda siphon. Facilities may change, so check the operator’s latest information before visiting.

A guided tour of the Bishop’s Palace ends in the walled palace garden. From there, you can enjoy views of the rivers and Radó Island. The palace is not open for individual visits; it can only be visited on a guided tour at scheduled times announced in advance. Tour arrangements may change, so check the schedule beforehand.
