A richly carved high altar, a pilgrimage chapel and a collection on local history mark different cultural traces in Szany. The themes range from ecclesiastical architecture to everyday clothing and dance traditions—an ideal starting point for a stay focused on history and culture.

Historical Milestones

Szany received market rights in 1437. By 1398 at the latest, the settlement belonged to the estate of Kesző Castle, owned by the Diocese of Győr. In the 16th century, Szany was the most populous settlement in the Rábaköz. The weavers’ guild provides another datable trace: its regulations date from 1726. Together, these details mark different historical milestones, from medieval land ownership to guild regulations.

Architectural History and Sacred Art

The church’s main nave was built in 1767 by Bishop Ferenc Zichy. In 1867, side aisles were added to the church, with two smaller towers at their corners. The richly carved high altar dates to around 1700, and the tabernacle to 1750. Ludwig Beyfuss painted the altarpiece “Finding of the Holy Cross” in 1855.

Parts of the church’s furnishings date from before and after the main nave was built: the high altar and tabernacle are older than the 1767 nave, while the 1855 altarpiece predates the 1867 extension. This makes it possible to distinguish the artworks and construction phases chronologically.

The Bishop’s Palace was completed in 1783 in the Neoclassical style. Several bishops of Győr used it as their preferred summer residence until 1945. The former Episcopal Castle in Szany is a nationally protected monument.

Pilgrimage and Local Culture

The Szent Anna Chapel was built in 1753 and extended in 1901. Its sanctuary contains a devotional image of Saint Anne, Saint Joachim and the young Mary. For nearly 250 years, the chapel has been a pilgrimage site in the Rábaköz, drawing pilgrims from beyond the region as well. It is locally protected as a pilgrimage site. At the parish church, the building phases and furnishings shape the experience of sacred art; Szent Anna combines architectural history with a long pilgrimage tradition and the devotional image in its sanctuary. The two sites therefore have distinct focuses.

The local history collection is on the ground floor of the Bishop’s Palace at Kossuth utca 2. It presents Szany’s historical industries and folk clothing for festive and everyday occasions. In this way, it turns attention to work and clothing, complementing sacred art and architectural history. Check the collection’s access conditions before your visit.

The Bokréta Hagyományőrző Néptánc Együttes has been active since 1931 and presents revived local traditions at dance events. Specific event dates may vary; check the schedule if you want to plan your visit around a performance.
