Zákányszék combines church and memorial history with rural everyday culture, seasonal connections to nature and regional specialties. Local themes range from the history of a church and its memorial sites to protected habitats and traditional dishes.

Church History and Memorial Sites

The present-day Szentháromság-Templom was created in 1924 by expanding an older chapel. Magyari Nándor designed the renovation, and master mason Gál Mihály carried it out. Bishop Glattfelder Gyula consecrated the church on July 25, 1925. Both the building’s history and the names of those involved are therefore part of local tradition.

The Papp-kereszt stands by a farmstead in Zákányszék. Papp Vince had it erected in 1923 in memory of people who had experienced the horrors of war at Doberdò and along the Isonzo. Another memorial site is Zákányszéki Kegyeleti Park. It was created on the grounds of the old cemetery on Szegfű-János Street and commemorates those buried there. Since 2002, a tulip-shaped fountain by ceramic artist László Szalay has also been part of the park at Lengyel tér.

Rural history is also explored at various sites. The Házi Múzeum on Móra-Ferenc Street presents characteristic aspects of traditional rural life. The Öregház Tanyamúzeum focuses on old household objects and tools from farm life, as well as everyday life in the past; its presentation is considered to be expertly guided. The house now known as Tömörkény-ház belonged to Tömörkény’s father-in-law.

Protected Nature and Seasonal Observations

A significant part of Ezerarcú Sömlyék lies in Zákányszék. From early spring to late autumn, the area offers glimpses of its protected and specially protected plant and animal life. The old pedunculate oak, Kocsányos tölgy, adds a specific story to these nature themes: Vass Miklós planted it in 1880. It is one of the country’s 100 oldest trees and is protected as a plant.

In the area around Zákányszék, water remains in spring in the lowest parts of the saline depression, including Lódri-tó. Flocks of migratory birds then gather nearby. Lódri-tó is protected as an ex lege area. While Ezerarcú Sömlyék offers glimpses of nature from early spring to late autumn, these observations of water and birds relate specifically to spring.

Routes, Music and Regional Specialties

The Alföldi Kék-Túra route passes through Zákányszék and continues to the Fehértó birdwatching site and the Ópusztaszeri Nemzeti Történelmi Emlékpark. If you include the route in your plans, check the latest route information before setting out.

The Zákányszéki Parasztkórus formed in the village in 1964 and performs as a folk music ensemble. Folk songs make up two-thirds of its repertoire. Local food culture features a range of specialties: Kerekes Homokháti Őszibarack Pálinka originated in Zákányszék and is nationally protected. Babérné rétese is a strudel made using a special recipe and is popular in Zákányszék and beyond.

The Zákányszéki Böllérnap was first held in 2003 at the initiative of local farmers. The festival revolves around traditional pig slaughtering and aims to preserve local flavors and strengthen community cohesion. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the latest dates and program details before making plans.
