Üllés offers several specific starting points for planning a trip: a church in the town center, a history of farmsteads dating back to the 18th century, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. The town’s history can be put in context using clear dates; at the Horgásztó and on the Írisz Tanösvény, other questions come to the fore, such as the location of a destination or how much time to allow for a walk.

Church and Local History

The Páduai Szent Antal Templom stands in the center of Üllés. The former church was consecrated in 1900 in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua. The new church, built as its replacement, was consecrated on April 1, 2001. The two dates therefore refer to different church buildings: 1900 to the former church and 2001 to the new building.

Alongside the compact town center, the settlement pattern includes a sparsely populated outlying area. Üllés remains a community shaped by farmsteads. This character has a long history: farmsteads were already present here in 1748; by 1787, their number had risen to 153. These details link the present-day description of the municipality with two specific milestones in its farmstead history.

Alkotóház and Folk Art

The present-day Alkotóház was established in 2000. Its roots reach back to the opening of the former cultural center in 1962. The Alkotóház is dedicated to preserving folk art traditions. Two distinct historical perspectives therefore coexist in Üllés: the church’s consecration history and the development of a cultural institution with older roots.

Horgásztó and a Walk

The Üllési Horgásztó lies northwest of the center, beside the road toward Kiskunhalas. Its surroundings are well maintained and landscaped like a park. Recreational activities there include grilling and cooking in a cauldron. An angling competition has traditionally been held around the lake every year. If you would like to include it in your travel plans, it is best to check the specific event dates.

Allow about 1 to 1.5 hours for a walk along the Írisz Tanösvény. Signs at the stops provide information about local landscape features, including the Siberian iris. The two time references help with different planning questions: an approximate duration is given for the walk, while the specific date matters for the angling competition.

The Wider Setting: Csongrád

The broader destination of Csongrád offers a regional perspective on Csongrád-Csanád. The region’s landscape is shaped by the Tisza and its oxbow lakes, the Maros and Körös rivers, and numerous lakes and canals. Csongrád-Csanád is also rich in thermal and medicinal waters. Special plant and animal species around salt lakes and in sandy forests and puszta areas are protected in nature reserves. The region also has a rich architectural history: more than 200 protected historic buildings are recorded in Csongrád-Csanád.

Among the region’s cultural destinations is the Ópusztaszer National Historical Heritage Park. Its rotunda houses the “Szer monostora és települése” exhibition; the park also includes the open-air ethnographic collection, the Skanzen. A time slot is required to view the Feszty Panorama. These examples add a broader regional perspective to the local history without equating the individual destinations.
