Balástya combines distinctive sacred architecture with memorial sites and natural attractions. The Hindu temple presents an unusual architectural contrast: its entrance porch recalls buildings of the Great Hungarian Plain and encloses a temple tower in the Orissa style, decorated with bricks. The temple was built in 2000 to the plans of architect Szigeti Gyula.

Building History and Remembrance

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Anthony of Padua was built by the city of Szeged in 1903 in the eclectic style. Its construction date is almost a century earlier than that of the Hindu temple; this comparison highlights different periods in local architectural history. The Kőrös windmill also has a clearly dated construction history: work began in 1996, and it was fully completed in 2000. Alongside architecture and technology, the memorial to the victims of the Second World War serves as a place of remembrance. It commemorates the residents of Balástya who died in the war.

Salt Meadows and Birdlife

Müller-szék is among the natural attractions recorded in Balástya. The Őszeszék salt meadow provides a habitat for numerous protected species; the area's most significant natural feature is the birdlife of its salt lake. At Őszeszék, both the distinctive habitat and the birdlife take center stage. Őszeszéki Lake served as a fishing lake for a long time and was about one kilometer long and 71 hectares in size. It is currently privately owned.

Community Festivals and Their Annual Schedule

The Böllér Festival is one of Balástya's annual community events and involves substantial community participation. The program announced for the XXIV Balástya Böllér Festival in 2025 included a demonstration of pig processing, as well as sausage stuffing and grilling by teams from the elementary school. Falunapok, the Vegetable and Flower Festival, and Lovasnapok have also been listed as community events since 2000. If you are traveling for a festival, check the current event dates in advance.

Csongrád as a Wider Travel Destination

Those looking beyond Balástya will find a broader regional setting in the wider destination of Csongrád. Csongrád-Csanád is shaped by the Tisza and its oxbow lakes, the Maros and Körös rivers, and numerous lakes and canals. The region is rich in thermal and medicinal waters. Special plant and animal species around salt lakes, sandy forests, and puszta areas are protected in nature reserves. Müller-szék and Őszeszék are among the natural attractions recorded in Balástya; rivers and medicinal waters provide the broader regional context.

Cultural attractions in the wider destination of Csongrád include the Ópusztaszer National Historical Memorial Park: the Rotunda houses the “Szer Monastery and Settlement” exhibition, and the park also includes the open-air ethnographic collection, the Skanzen. A visit to the Feszty Panorama requires an appointment; check the schedule in advance. Szeged offers a different perspective: the visitor center of Szeged Cathedral features permanent exhibitions on the building history of the cathedral and Dóm Square, as well as the liturgical collection of the Diocese of Szeged-Csanád. An observation deck in the west tower offers panoramic views of Szeged and is reached via 302 steps. Check the latest access information before your visit. The Móra Ferenc Museum is housed in the Palace of Public Culture, built in 1896 in the neoclassical style. Its exhibition topics include ethnography, natural history, and art history relating to Szeged and its surroundings; check the current program if a particular exhibition is important to your plans.
