Baksi Puszta gives Baks a strong connection to nature: the area, which covers more than 400 hectares, lies in the outskirts of Baks, Csanytelek, Ópusztaszer, Pusztaszer and Tömörkény. Wetlands, well-preserved grasslands and seasonal birdlife are central features. Alongside nature, Baks also offers its own cultural and historical perspective.

A natural area with diverse habitats

Part of Baksi Puszta is a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention and a highly important stopover site for migratory birds. At the same time, the area is an important breeding and feeding ground for birds. Stopovers, breeding and feeding give birdlife here different roles.

Undisturbed, well-preserved saline and loess grasslands have been preserved, along with smaller salt marshes, reed beds and scattered groups of trees. Open grassland types therefore sit alongside smaller wetland areas, with groups of trees scattered throughout. Baksi Puszta cannot therefore be reduced to a single habitat type.

Birdlife through the seasons

Different features stand out at different times of year. In spring, large flocks form mainly among waders, especially black-tailed godwits and sandpipers. In autumn, wild geese and cranes are typical. Regularly occurring species also include black-winged stilts, avocets, black-tailed godwits and ferruginous ducks. If birdlife influences when you choose to travel, this difference can help you decide what to focus on: spring is especially associated with waders, while autumn is associated with wild geese and cranes. The two seasons therefore offer different nature experiences.

Traces of Baks’ history

At Temetőpart, in the southern part of the Baks area, the population associated with the Gáva culture engaged in significant metalworking. This historical connection adds another perspective on the area alongside its focus on nature.

One architectural highlight is the Jézus Szíve Római Katolikus Templom. It was designed in a style intended to make it appear as though it had been built a hundred years earlier. This deliberately aged appearance is therefore part of the design. Temetőpart and the church represent different cultural and historical themes: metalworking by a population associated with the Gáva culture in the former, and the effect of a deliberately chosen architectural style in the latter.

The wider setting: Csongrád

In the wider travel destination of Csongrád-Csanád, the Tisza and its oxbow lakes, the Maros and the Körös, along with numerous lakes and canals, shape the landscape. The region is also rich in thermal and medicinal waters. Special plant and animal species around saline lakes and in sandy forests and Puszta areas are protected in nature reserves. More than 200 listed buildings are also recorded in Csongrád-Csanád. This regional context broadens the picture to include waterscapes, nature conservation and cultural heritage, while Baksi Puszta gives Baks its own distinctive focus.

Choose your travel dates and accommodation

When looking for a holiday apartment in Baks, you can first match your travel dates to your interest in nature: birdlife differs between spring and autumn. Temetőpart and the church add local history to this theme.
