In Csongrád, insights into local ways of life and city history meet a remarkable collection of costumed dolls and spring birdwatching in the protected Csongrádi Kónya-szék area. Specific seasonal museum opening hours can help you plan; check event dates for your travel year.

Ways of Life and City History

The Csongrádi Tájház presents the way of life and domestic culture of former fishermen, shipwrights, boatmen, and day laborers from Csongrád’s inland settlement in two buildings furnished in period style. The focus here is on the daily lives of people in different occupations. The permanent exhibition “Csongrád, a Fekete vár virága” at the Tari-László Museum offers a different perspective on the past: it covers important events in the city’s history, from prehistoric times to the change of political system. The exhibition was created in 2024.

More than 500 costumed dolls from countries across four continents are on display at the Népek Háza Babamúzeum. The collection broadens the view beyond local history. Those who want to combine different themes will find a contrast between the domestic culture and former occupations of Csongrád’s inland settlement, the city’s history at the museum, and an international doll collection.

Church History and Furnishings

The history of the Nagyboldogasszony-Templom can be traced through clear dates: the cornerstone was laid in 1762, the church was completed in several stages, and it was consecrated in 1769 in honor of Nagyboldogasszony. Its furnishings include a main altarpiece that is a copy of Titian’s “Assunta,” and a Rieger organ dating from 1910. The building history and works of art offer two different points of reference for viewing the church: its construction over several years and individual details of its furnishings.

Spring Birds and Routes

In the protected Csongrádi Kónya-szék area, numerous wading birds gather in spring, including black-tailed godwits and redshanks. The birdlife gives the time of year a specific seasonal appeal. Cycle routes and hiking trails connect Csongrád with nearby settlements.
