Szegi combines the tree-lined banks of the Bodrog with a special testament to mining history: the Hatalos-hegyi wine-cellar system. There are also facilities for river travelers at the tourist water base. Two questions are particularly important when planning your trip: Are you looking for a quiet break by the water, or would you like to plan a canoe trip? And which regional destinations would complement your stay?
By the Bodrog: a peaceful riverbank and mining history
The Bodrog riverbank in Szegi is an important tourist spot. Its tree-lined setting offers a peaceful retreat for local residents and visitors to the village. This makes a stay by the river the focus in Szegi, without requiring a particular excursion or set itinerary.
The Hatalos-hegyi wine-cellar system offers a very different perspective on the area. It lies on the boundary between Szegi and Szegilong and was created in the 1960s from medieval mines. Its origins thus bring together two periods: the mines date back to the Middle Ages, while the system in its present form dates from the 1960s. Anyone interested in the history of the area will find a specific point of interest here, alongside the natural and river themes.
Plan for the water base and canoe trips
The tourist water base in Szegi offers river travelers accommodation, food and cooking facilities, as well as campsites. Visitors can rent kayaks and canoes there for shorter trips. However, access to the base is inadequate. Before making specific plans, check that the facilities are currently accessible and available.
A Szegi cycling and canoe tour was described for 2024: the route ran from the Tokaji Vízitúra Központ along a then-new cycle path beside the Bodrog to the Szegi Vízibázis. From there, participants paddled back to Tokaj. On the return trip, they could stop for refreshments at the Bodrog-parti Lebuj-kanyar. This itinerary shows how cycling and paddling were combined on that tour at the time; for current travel plans, check whether a similar tour is being offered.
More topics in the wider destination
Those considering destinations beyond Szegi in the wider Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén destination can choose from a range of themes. The Baradla-Domica Cave System is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site comprising the Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. In Aggtelek, the short cave tour is one kilometer long, takes 60 minutes, and is rated easy.
The Tokaj wine region offers a different focus: its climate, soil quality, and slope exposure are suitable for growing grapes. The region is legally protected as a designated wine-growing area. Together with Szegi’s riverside landscape and mining history, this offers a selection of different themes for a trip through Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén. Which ones you combine depends on whether you would like to focus your stay more on the riverbank and water activities, history, or the landscape of the wine-growing area.
