Three distinct travel themes come together in Tiszaújváros: a thermal and open-air bath classified as a medicinal spa, designated riparian forests along the Tisza section, and several churches with striking architectural details. This lets you weigh bathing options, nature and architecture when planning your trip, without limiting your stay to just one focus.
Thermal Water and Swimming Options
The Tiszaújvárosi Gyógy- és Strandfürdő has been classified as a regional medicinal spa since 2001. It uses thermal mineral water that rises from a depth of 1,200 metres at a temperature of 65 °C. The water has a relatively high salt concentration, with sodium chloride and bicarbonate. This spa therefore focuses both on the properties of the water and on facilities for leisure and relaxation.
The site covers just under 7 hectares. It has five leisure pools, a landscaped sunbathing lawn, sports grounds, a playground, and sales and service pavilions. The mix of facilities sets it apart from a swimming pool alone: in addition to the pools, there are areas for relaxing and playing sports. Some facility details may change; check the current services and opening hours before your visit.
Another swimming option is offered by the Tiszaújvárosi Sportcentrum. Its pool is 25 metres long, has six lanes and is 1.8 metres deep. Swimmers are welcome there all seven days of the week. For specific planning, check the current opening hours, as visitor arrangements may change. This allows you to compare the larger bath, with its several leisure areas, and the sports pool based on their different facilities.
Riparian Forests and Lowland Landscape
The riparian forests of Tiszaújváros are designated as a Natura 2000 site under the name “Tiszaújvárosi ártéri erdők.” Along the Tisza section, they comprise two areas of old mixed forest rich in ash trees. Together, these forest areas cover 24 hectares. Endangered species that live in the riparian forests include the scarce fritillary (Euphydryas maturna) and the European fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina). The designation and the species described give the nature theme a specific ecological dimension, without requiring visitors to observe individual animals.
The lowland landscape between the Sajó and the Tisza is also part of the local character, offering opportunities for fishing and water sports. An annual natural phenomenon, the tiszavirágzás (Tisza mayfly emergence), can be observed in Tiszaújváros. In addition to the protected forest areas, the river landscape and this recurring natural phenomenon thus offer distinct aspects to consider when planning a trip.
Churches and Architecture
The Tiszaújvárosi Református Templom was consecrated on 16 October 1994. Its architecture is inspired by the belfries and bell towers of the Upper Tisza region. The sanctuary measures 12 × 30 metres and can accommodate 400 people. Its date, regional architectural influences and dimensions offer different ways to appreciate the building: its origins, its design inspiration and its scale.
The Roman Catholic Church of “Magyarok Nagyasszonya” was handed over in 1993 and is classified as a protected architectural asset under a local ordinance. It has three naves, a cruciform floor plan and a 26-metre-high tower. The stained-glass windows in the transept and choir were designed by Tiszaújváros-born painter Tibor Bráda. Its architecture can therefore be appreciated not only through its floor plan and tower, but also through a specific named artistic detail.
The Greek Catholic Church of Urunk Színeváltozása combines a polygonal foundation with a polygonal dome; its interior walls are entirely covered with icons. It was consecrated on 11 August 1996. The Reformed Church of Tiszaszederkény, a district of Tiszaújváros, offers an earlier consecration date: it was consecrated on 20 October 1799. The comparison thus ranges from the architecture of the two newer churches to a significantly earlier construction date in the Tiszaszederkény district.
