Hercegkút is best explored through two distinct cellar rows: Kőporosi in the north and Gomboshegyi on the hillside. Their architectural forms and layouts differ considerably. Other highlights include the Sváb Tájház, with memorabilia from the Swabian community, and the Gombos-hegyi Kálvária. Architectural heritage, wine-growing themes and local history each offer a different perspective on a stay in the village.

Two Cellar Rows with Distinct Layouts

Kőporosi Pincesor is in the northern part of Hercegkút, on the Makkoshotyka side. Along winding, paved lanes, 87 largely uniform cellars with triangular gables stand in a row. The recurring gable shape defines the look of the cellar row, while the paved curves give the site a clear spatial layout. At the upper end are a playground, barbecue areas and gazebos. Gomboshegyi Pincesor has a different layout: its cellars, also with triangular gables, stand on the hillside in four orderly rows.

Comparing the two Pincesor, you can see both recurring forms and different spatial arrangements. Both feature triangular gables; at Kőporosi, the cellar row follows winding, paved lanes, while at Gomboshegyi, the cellars are arranged in rows on the hillside. Those interested in architectural forms can look not only at individual gables, but also at how the paths, hillside and cellar rows relate to one another.

Access and Opening Hours

The two Pincesor are at opposite ends of Hercegkút and are open year-round, at any time, and free of charge. This applies to the cellar rows; wine cellars have varying opening hours. So if you are planning a tasting, check the opening hours of the cellar in question in advance. Free access to the sites should be distinguished from the opening hours of individual wine cellars.

Wine-Growing Themes at Kőporosi Pincesor

The Világörökségi Élményközpont was completed in 2023 on the north side of Kőporosi Pincesor. The center is intended as an event venue, a cultural community space and a tasting room. Its infographic exhibition focuses on Aszú formation, local wine-growing traditions and Tokaj wine types. The center thus complements the visible cellar architecture with a thematic perspective on wine-growing and wine varieties. Check whether the center is open before visiting.

Swabian Local History and Architectural Heritage

The Sváb Tájház focuses on Hercegkút’s Swabian community. Its collection includes historical objects and memorabilia from the community. Alongside the cellar rows, the village’s shared heritage is also a focus. Following a renovation completed at the end of May 2007, the house reopened on August 18, 2007. Before visiting, it is advisable to enquire about current visitor arrangements.

The Gombos-hegyi Kálvária is also one of the local structures that visitors can see. It offers another perspective on local architectural heritage. A visit to Hercegkút can therefore take in not only the cellar rows, but also the history of the Swabian community and another local structure.
