Around 900 historic wine cellars and wine houses on Avas form a row in the city centre; many are 300 to 400 years old. The city also offers a history of theatre, a collection of Orthodox art and natural attractions that can be experienced in different ways. When choosing Miskolc, you can prioritise these cultural and nature-oriented highlights according to your interests: a guided cave tour, a nature trail and a cable-car ride each offer a different way to engage with the area.

Wine Cellars, Theatre and Cultural History

The historic wine cellars on Avas stand out for their size and age. The approximate figure of 900 includes cellars and wine houses; many date back 300 to 400 years. They form a row in the city centre and provide a distinctive feature among Miskolc’s other cultural attractions.

The Miskolc National Theatre on Széchenyi Street stands on the site of what was once Hungary’s first stone theatre. You can explore the history of theatre through the place itself: today’s name points to a stage whose predecessor played a special role in the history of stone theatres in Hungary.

The Hungarian Orthodox Museum displays objects related to Orthodox liturgy, handcrafted crosses made by monks from Mount Athos, and Greek Orthodox icons from the 17th and 18th centuries. The collection also includes old schoolbooks and depictions of other Orthodox churches in Hungary. It therefore encompasses religious objects and crafts, as well as evidence of education and depictions of Orthodox churches. For a cultural visit, it offers a different focus from the history of the city’s wine cellars or theatre.

Caves and Nature Trails

Guided tours of Anna Cave are offered year-round. Of its total length of 570 metres, 208 metres are open to visitors: the tour therefore explores part of the cave, not its entire length. Check before travelling whether tours are currently running. The protected Szeleta Cave takes its name from the prehistoric Szeleta culture and, as a natural and cultural attraction, offers a different cave history from that of Anna Cave.

The Szinva Nature Trail is about four kilometres long and runs from the Ottó Herman Memorial Park to Lillafüred. Its approximate length and two endpoints provide a clear basis for considering it as a walking option in its own right. The Hanging Gardens of Lillafüred are freely accessible. However, their stone steps make them difficult to navigate with a wheelchair or pushchair; this limitation is important to bear in mind when planning a visit.

There is also a nature trail at the Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park, featuring a nine-metre-high observation tower and a 32-metre-long suspension bridge over a valley. If you are considering a ride instead of a nature trail, the Lillafüred Chairlift offers another way to experience the natural surroundings. It takes passengers along a one-kilometre route to Jávor Mountain. Check the current timetable before your ride.

A Chapter in the History of Diósgyőr Castle

Until 1526, Diósgyőr Castle served as a bridal gift and country residence for six queens. Both roles form part of its historical significance: the castle was associated with royal residences and gift-giving. If you are planning a visit, check the current access arrangements in advance.
