Geology, protected landscape and local history give Dédestapolcsány its distinctive character. If you are looking for accommodation, you can start by considering which of these themes you would like to shape your stay: the rock formation at Nagy-hegy, the protected area on the edge of the village, or the church and traditional crafts.

Geological Features and Landscape

A geological outcrop lies on the slope of Nagy-hegy. Its Cretaceous conglomerate contains limestone blocks several metres across. This gives Dédestapolcsány a tangible example of a distinctive rock formation. Nearby is also the 77-hectare Lázbérc Reservoir, created on the Bán-patak stream below Dédestapolcsány. The outcrop and reservoir offer contrasting landscape features: one centres on a geological formation, the other on a man-made body of water.

Hiking in the Lázbérc Landscape Protection Area

The Lázbérc Landscape Protection Area extends to the boundary of Dédestapolcsány. Marked hiking trails are open to visitors on foot. However, certain areas can only be accessed with special permission. The nature conservation authority may also temporarily restrict access to the habitats of certain species. Do not assume, therefore, that all sections are equally accessible. Before setting out, check the current conditions with the relevant park authority.

Crafts and Architectural History in the Village

The exhibition at the Dédestapolcsány Kézműves Ház features a 19th-century farrier’s workshop preserved in its original condition. Visitors can try out the bellows made from horsehide and the anvil, and learn more about the individual stages of hemp processing. You must contact the venue in advance to arrange a visit; check the current arrangements beforehand.

The Roman Catholic church offers another perspective on local history. Built in 1820 in a classicising late Baroque style, it is protected as a historic monument for its architectural, art-historical and decorative features. While the workshop presents traditional craftwork and processing, the church highlights architecture and its furnishings.

If you are looking for a hotel or other accommodation in Dédestapolcsány, plan your stay around the visits that matter to you. For a hike, take the access rules in the landscape protection area into account; a visit to the Kézműves Ház requires contacting the venue in advance.

More to Explore in the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén Destination

If you look beyond Dédestapolcsány to the wider Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén destination, you will find other distinct themes. In Aggtelek, the Baradla-Domica cave system forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Caves of the Aggtelek and Slovak Karst. The short Aggtelek Cave Tour is rated easy, covers one kilometre and takes 60 minutes. It offers a clearly defined excursion within the same wider destination. Miskolc Zoo and Cultural Park has a nature trail with a nine-metre-high observation tower and a 32-metre-long suspension bridge. Thus, in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, alongside local history and protected landscapes, visitors can also choose between a cave tour and a nature trail featuring striking structures.
