Jósvafő can be explored through two different questions: Which cave tour would you like to take, and how much time would you like to set aside for a nature trail? There is also a church surrounded by a defensive wall in the old town and an award-winning Tájház. This lets you weigh nature experiences against culture within the same destination, rather than shaping your stay around just one kind of excursion.

Cave tours with different route features

A particular highlight of the Jósvafői rövidtúra in Baradla-barlang comes in the second part: the route passes by or between the formations Krokodilszáj, Hentesüzlet and Tóparti kastély, and continues to Óriások terme. The tour begins and ends at the Jósvafő cave entrance. This keeps the loop clearly oriented around that entrance, while the named formations provide specific landmarks inside the cave.

The tour through Kossuth-barlang describes a different sequence of route features: over rocks, across a wire-rope bridge above a lake and up ladders, visitors reach Reménytelen-szifon. The two cave tours therefore differ in the sections and destinations mentioned. If you plan to take the Kossuth-barlang tour, check current availability with the national park.

Compare nature trails and hiking times

For planning your time, the Tohonya-Kuriszlán tanösvény offers two hikes of different lengths. The longer loop starts in Jósvafő, is 9 kilometres long and takes about six hours at a leisurely pace. The shorter hike is 4.5 kilometres long and returns to Jósvafő via 12 stations. When weighing up the two routes, you can compare the approximate duration and length of the longer loop with the shorter route and its stations.

Around Jósvafő, the Tohonya-Kuriszlán tanösvény also connects 25 geological, geomorphological and natural features. These 25 points describe the variety of topics in the area; the 12 stations belong to the shorter hike. When choosing, you can therefore consider not only the time involved but also whether you prefer a longer loop or a shorter route with marked stations.

Church, Tájház and educational programmes

In the old town, the present-day church is surrounded by a defensive wall. Together, the church and wall form an architectural detail to look out for when exploring the town centre. The Tájház in Jósvafő received the “Az év múzeuma 2007” (Museum of the Year 2007) award. These two places offer different cultural points of interest: the walled church and the award-winning Tájház.

Another offering is based in a small manor house at Táncsics Mihály utca 1: the Aggteleki Nemzeti Park Oktatóközpont offers lectures, educational activities, field and craft activities, and forest school programmes for kindergarten and school groups. Its target audience is therefore clearly specified. If you are planning a group visit, check the current arrangements directly with the centre.

Choosing what suits your stay

Jósvafő offers several clearly distinct ways to plan your day: a cave loop featuring named formations and returning to the Jósvafő entrance, a Kossuth-barlang tour with rocks, a wire-rope bridge and ladders, and hikes of different lengths. The estimate of about six hours at a leisurely pace makes the longer Tohonya-Kuriszlán loop especially easy to factor into a rough schedule; for the shorter hike, 4.5 kilometres and 12 stations provide the specific details. Depending on your interests, complement these nature experiences with cultural sites in the town centre or a group programme at the Oktatóközpont.
