Boldogkőváralja is home to the Castle Garden of the Péchy-Zichy mansion and the Boldogkőváralja Tájház. Nearby, a route towards Regéc leads along a ridge with views of Boldogkő Castle. These features offer different points of interest: garden design and parkland nature in the village, a local history museum and a route through the landscape.

Castle Garden and Tájház

The Castle Garden was created at the same time as the mansion. The Péchy family laid it out from an old forest; its design shows elements of English and French garden art. The history of the grounds thus brings together an original forest and different garden styles.

The park of the Péchy-Zichy mansion also has a strong connection with nature. Old, large trees and dense shrubs provide habitat for a rich variety of birdlife. Several fish species, as well as crayfish, smooth newts and mallard ducks, live in the pond; the species present may change over time. The grounds and wildlife represent two different aspects of the park: its designed landscape and the habitats among the trees and water.

The Boldogkőváralja Tájház is a local history museum in the village. It adds another cultural point of interest to the Castle Garden. If you are interested in the history and design of a site, the garden offers a distinct focus; the local history museum presents a different perspective on the village.

A route towards Regéc

The route starts at Boldogkőváralja’s small railway stop. The path runs along the edge of orchards and climbs to the ridge of Vám-kertek. From a stone cross, there are views of Boldogkő Castle, which stands on a hill.

Unlike the Castle Garden, this route is shaped by orchards, the ridge and the views. The two landscape experiences are easy to distinguish: the designed grounds of the Péchy-Zichy mansion and the views of the castle along the route towards Regéc.

The wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén

The wider destination of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén offers other, distinct nature-related attractions. The Hucul herd can be viewed year-round on the pastures of Gergés-lápa, about 1.5 kilometres north of Jósvafő. Rules relating to the animals may change; check the latest information before visiting. The Zemplén Landscape Protection Area is also part of the Zemplén Mountains, whose natural conditions influence the area's flora and fauna.

The Baradla-Domica cave system is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst. A short Aggtelek cave tour is 1 kilometre long, takes 60 minutes and is considered easy. There is also a nature trail connecting the Aggtelek and Jósvafő entrances to Baradla Cave, offering insights into its natural and cultural history. The tour and trail offer different ways to explore the cave landscape: a short tour described by its length and duration, and a path between two entrances with interpretive information.

The Tokaj wine region represents viticulture and cultural heritage in the wider region. Its climate, soil quality and slope exposure are suitable for growing grapes; the wine region is legally protected as a protected wine-growing area. In Sátoraljaújhely, the Ungvári cellar labyrinth connects at least 27 cellars across an area of 50,000 square metres. Beneath the park of Rákóczi Castle in Sárospatak lies a cellar complex about 2,000 metres long, with two rooms for wine tastings. These examples show the built scale of the region's wine culture alongside its landscape.
