Szigetvár combines a rich castle history with exhibitions, sacred architecture, thermal waters and local specialties. Its historical perspectives range from military history objects to everyday life in Ottoman settlements. There is also church art, a park with statues, a cultural and educational venue, local wines and a recognized food product. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether history, thermal baths or local culture should be the focus of your stay.

History from Several Perspectives

Szigetvár Castle was declared a national memorial site in 2016. The Andrássy Castle houses the military history exhibition “Szigetvár 1566,” with objects from the 16th century and items from the Zrínyi family. The exhibition “Megállítani Szulejmánt” offers an experience of travelling through time: interactive models present layers of the castle’s history and a map of modern Szigetvár.

The Török-Ház offers a different perspective, with insights into everyday life in settlements during the Ottoman period. It is considered the only surviving residential building from this era among Hungary’s preserved architectural remains from that time. The formats therefore differ considerably: historical objects, interactive models with a city map, and a glimpse into the lives of earlier settlements each offer a distinct focus.

Church Architecture and Historical Remembrance

The Ali Pasha Mosque was built in 1588–1589 and later converted into a Catholic parish church; today it is the Szent Rókus Church. The dome of Szent Rókus Church features a fresco by István Dorffmeister. It depicts the deaths of Zrínyi and Suleiman, as well as the recapture of the castle.

The Magyar-Török Barátság Park was established in 1994, on the 500th anniversary of Sultan Suleiman’s birth. Its location is associated with Suleiman’s siege of Sziget Castle in 1566. Statues of Sultan Suleiman and Zrínyi Miklós face the site of their battle at Sziget Castle.

Thermal Baths, Culture and Local Specialties

Szigetvári Gyógyfürdő is located in the city centre and is supplied with 62 °C thermal water. As facilities and operating arrangements can change, check the latest information before visiting. Vigadó is one of Szigetvár’s significant cultural and educational venues.

Local culinary names are also part of the area’s character: Szentegáti Drotter májas is recognized as a local value in Szigetvár. Zrínyi vére and Szultán könnye are considered local wines. Alongside the historical themes, thermal waters, a cultural venue and regional products offer different interests to choose from during your stay.

Hotels to Suit Your Travel Interests

The wines mentioned above and Szentegáti Drotter májas add a culinary dimension to these themes. Consider which interests are most important for your trip before choosing a hotel.
