A Late Baroque Reformed church and a fishing reservoir give Merenye two distinct focal points. For those interested in cultural history, the church’s construction date, the attribution of its decoration and the history of its pulpit are central. By the water, fishing, access routes and specific access conditions shape your plans. You can tailor your stay to whichever of these interests you most.

Cultural history: the Reformed church

The Reformed church in Merenye is Late Baroque and was built in 1781. It is considered the oldest dated painted church in Southern Transdanubia. Of the eight surviving painted churches in Szigetvidék, some of which have been partly painted over, it is considered the best-preserved.

A choir panel attributes the decoration to Nagyváti Ferenc. The church’s original pulpit was found dismantled in the parish barn, restored at the Janus Pannonius Museum and later transferred to the Ráday Museum in Kecskemét. The construction date, attribution and history of the pulpit are distinct aspects of the church: they place the building in its historical context while also telling the story of its furnishings.

Fishing reservoir: water area and conditions

The Merenye Reservoir has 120 hectares of fishable open water. Its average depth is 2.5 metres. The operator describes the lakebed as obstacle-free and uniformly free of silt. National and international boilie fishing competitions are held at the lake. If you want to plan your trip around a competition, check the current dates.

Boilie anglers staying for at least 24 hours may be able to rent a rigid boat, subject to availability and booking. Check availability in advance if having a boat is important to your plans. Dogs are welcome at Merenye Fishing Lake; check the current pet rules before your visit.

Getting to and accessing the reservoir

From Route 6, turn right immediately after Görösgál. Then drive about five kilometres along a paved road through Merenye to the last turnoff. All fishing spots at the reservoir are accessible by car, but access via unpaved roads is weather-dependent. Check the route locally before travelling, especially if you plan to use these roads to reach the fishing spots.

The reservoir grounds are private property, and the entrance is secured by a barrier. Check the current access conditions before setting out. This will help you plan your route and your time by the water in accordance with the applicable access rules.
