Two hiking routes pass through Ibafa, and the Pipamúzeum adds a cultural highlight. This gives you two concrete points of interest to consider when choosing where to stay: a route through the southern Zselic and a collection featuring the original “ibafai fapipa”.

Hiking Routes Through Ibafa

The southern Zselic section of the Dél-Dunántúli Piros Túra is 21.68 km long. It runs via Kisibafa and Ibafa to Szentmártoni halastó, then continues to Terecseny, Antalszállás and State Road 67 at the county border. The distance refers to the section described; the sequence of places also shows how Ibafa fits into the longer route.

Another route is 19.01 km long. It leads from Szigetvár via Zsibóti-szőlőhegy, Sebesi-erdő and Almáskeresztúr through Ibafa and Horváthertelend to Szabás. Here, Ibafa’s section can be understood in relation to a different sequence of starting points, places along the way and destinations.

The Zselic section described is therefore 2.67 km longer than the route from Szigetvár to Szabás. However, these are different routes, not two distance figures for the same trail. So, for comparison, consider not just the kilometres but also the places named and how each route fits into its wider course.

The Pipamúzeum

The Pipamúzeum in Ibafa has been in operation since the 1960s. On display are the original “ibafai fapipa” and pipes belonging to Mihály Károlyi and Ferenc Deák.

More highlights in the wider destination of Baranya

The wider destination of Baranya offers further cultural and natural highlights. In Pécs, the Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pécs includes the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” displays, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. Thus, Pécs brings together Early Christian funerary architecture and wall painting alongside exhibitions on the history of the Zsolnay family and factory.

The Ős-Dráva Visitor Centre near Szaporca offers an interactive exhibition, a demonstration farm area with hands-on management, and three themed educational trails. They introduce visitors to traditional farming, the Ős-Dráva programme and the wildlife along the Drava. The farm area features native Hungarian domestic animals, including Hungarian Grey cattle, Mangalica pigs, Hucul horses, and old sheep and poultry breeds.

Another natural highlight in Baranya is the Wilderness Trail along the Old Drava. It has a birdwatching and bird-ringing station, a lookout point, a photography hide, a covered activity area and several rest stops.

Siklós Castle is also among the cultural destinations in the wider destination of Baranya. It is one of Hungary’s best-preserved military complexes and one of the country’s most significant Renaissance buildings. The modernisation of the museum wing opened the Gothic section, which had previously been inaccessible to visitors. In Villány’s cellar row, you can go from cellar to cellar all year round and sample wines and food.
