Castle history, church art and wildlife watching offer different points of interest in Bükkösd. The Petrovszky, later Jeszenszky, Castle and the Roman Catholic church open up historical themes; at the Bükkösd Eco Park, animals in their natural surroundings and a choice between two named routes take centre stage. This makes it possible to tailor a stay to your own interests: competing accounts of the castle’s history, details of the church or wildlife watching at the eco park.

Castle: Design and Disputed Commission

The Petrovszky, later Jeszenszky, Castle in Bükkösd was designed by Fischer von Erlach. There is disagreement over who commissioned its construction. According to one account, Zsigmond Petrovszky had the castle built in 1786. Other researchers attribute the construction to Dániel Horváth, who had it built for his son-in-law József Petrovszky and his daughter Krisztina Horváth. The year 1786 applies only to the first attribution. The competing accounts therefore concern the question of who commissioned the building, while the design is attributed to Fischer von Erlach.

Church: Building History and Furnishings

The Roman Catholic church in Bükkösd was built in 1791 by Zsigmond Petrovszky and one of his siblings. It was designed by József Buch, the first drawing teacher in Pécs. Statues of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Sigismund stand in niches on the façade. Another tradition concerns the altar base: according to oral tradition, it came from the Pauline monastery on Jakabhegy near Pécs and is made of Goric marble.

Eco Park: Choosing a Route and Watching Wildlife

At the Bükkösd Eco Park, visitors can choose between the Völgy séta and Erdőjárók útja routes. They can also observe waterfowl and landfowl, as well as large game species found in Hungary, in their natural surroundings. This offers two different ways to explore the park: choosing a route and observing the animal groups mentioned there. Themed programmes are available for preschool and school groups; they include animal feeding and contact with animals, horse riding and a playground. These programmes must be booked in advance by arrangement.

More Cultural Attractions in Baranya

Cultural venues in Pécs offer a distinct focus in Baranya. The Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae comprises decorated tombs from the 4th century. They were built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pécs features the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” exhibitions, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. For children, the quarter also offers outdoor playgrounds, an interactive lab, a planetarium, the Bóbita Puppet Theatre, a ceramic painting workshop and courses at the Hercules Workshop. The freely accessible outdoor area can be entered and used free of charge during opening hours; check current opening hours before your visit. The Pécs attractions are distinct topics alongside the castle, church and eco park in Bükkösd.
