Several distinct routes of discovery converge in Pécsvárad: an educational trail leads to places of remembrance for the Germans of Pécsvárad, art and history come together at the castle, and hiking trails explore Zengő. When planning your trip, it is worth considering two different highlights: the town’s cultural history and a hike on the Zengő-kiskör, which returns to Pécsvárad.
An Educational Trail Through Pécsvárad’s History
The educational trail created by the German Nationality Self-Government of Pécsvárad presents what makes the Germans of Pécsvárad distinctive at seven stops and through several interactive features. Its route runs from Szentháromság tér via the former Német utca to Mott tér, taking in places of remembrance for the Germans of Pécsvárad. The trail thus connects a clearly described route through the town with a specific theme from its history.
You can optionally extend the loop towards the church and castle. When planning, you can choose between following the route as far as Mott tér and taking an extended loop. This additional detour is an option; it is not an essential part of the route described.
Hiking Trails to Zengő
Several hiking trails lead from Pécsvárad to the 682-metre summit of Zengő. One specifically described route is the Zengő-kiskör: it starts at Pécsvárad Castle, crosses Zengő and returns to Pécsvárad via Hosszúhetény. The route is about 14 kilometres long, with around 500 metres of elevation gain. Most of it lies outside Pécsvárad; its connection to the town is that it starts at the castle and returns to Pécsvárad.
The distance and elevation figures refer to this loop and help you assess it as a hiking option in its own right. No equivalent distance figures are provided here for the other trails to the summit. So when planning your hike, distinguish between Zengő as the shared destination and the specific details given for the Zengő-kiskör.
The Castle Chapel and Historical Insights
A Byzantine-style mural in the chapel of Pécsvárad Castle is traditionally said to depict the Archangel Michael. This traditional attribution is part of the description of the artwork. In the display kitchen in the castle courtyard, visitors can view the historical baking and cooking equipment on display and learn how food used to be prepared. The castle therefore offers both a mural and insights into historical cooking and baking equipment.
Pécsvárad’s school history exhibition offers a different kind of look back: it transports visitors to a classroom from the 1930s. Children can sit at the old school desks and experience a lesson in keeping with the school customs of the time. You must make contact before visiting. Be sure to take this requirement into account when planning.
Leányvásár and Traditional Crafts
The Pécsváradi Leányvásár was first held under this name in 1966, with performances by 15 folk dance groups. Its enduring features include a gathering of traditional folk dance groups and the presentation and market of traditional crafts. The event thus brings together dance groups and crafts as two distinct cultural highlights.
The Pécsvárad Fair of Lasses has been held every year in October since 1996. The programme includes a parade of traditional folk groups, a dance procession, a large evening show and a traditional crafts market in the town centre. If you would like to combine your trip with the event, check the dates for the year you plan to travel. This lets you take the recurring October event into account when planning your stay without assuming a specific date.
