Hassagy is a village in a valley with two streets, set in the hilly landscape of Baranya. Chapels on the edge of the plateau and in the wine-growing area, a settlement history with named districts, and an artificial lake along the watercourse give the village several distinct features.

Village Layout and Getting There

Hassagy can be reached via Main Road 57, which runs from Pécs to Mohács; the turnoff is near Olasz. Another access route is Road 5611 from Ellend. You can therefore plan your journey along the route via Olasz or Ellend.

The village lies at the confluence of the Ellendi Stream and the Vasas-Belvárdi-vízfolyás watercourse. The artificial Hásságyi-tó is located right next to Hassagy; it was created along the watercourse in the 1960s. The confluence and the man-made lake are two distinct features of the local waterscape.

The 206-metre-high Hásságyi-szőlőhegy lies south of Hassagy and west of Olasz. Fields and vineyards define the hill, which is also home to several crosses and statues. If you are planning a hike, check your route separately: no marked hiking trail passes through Hassagy. As local trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check the planned route shortly before setting out.

Chapels and Local History

The Szent-Rókus Chapel stands on the northwestern edge of Hassagy, at the edge of the plateau. Built in the Baroque style in 1769, it is protected locally. The Szentháromság Chapel is located in the Hassagy wine-growing area and was established in 1890 as a place of prayer against the spread of phylloxera. The two buildings have different local connections: one is associated with the plateau, the other with the history of viticulture.

Around 1740, German settlers arrived in Hassagy and established the district of “Schwabendorf” above the church. The street “Raizedorf” was later built to its west, on the other side of the stream valley. These names record two stages of settlement history and how they relate to one another geographically. Renovation work on the Roman Catholic Páduai-Szent-Antal Church began in June 2023 and ended in September 2023.

Daily Life and Getting Around

Hassagy’s library and free internet access are located in the building complex shared by the cultural centre, municipal office and doctor’s surgery. If you plan to use either service, check the latest usage information in advance. The cultural centre occasionally hosts events, including weddings, balls and programmes celebrating German national traditions. If you want to attend an event, it is a good idea to check the specific date in advance.

Cultural Attractions in the Wider Branau Travel Destination

Within the wider travel destination of Branau, Pécs offers its own archaeological and cultural highlights. The Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs from the 4th century, built as underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels and adorned with richly detailed Christian wall paintings. At the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter in Pécs, the programme includes the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” displays, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. These regional cultural attractions complement Hassagy’s local chapel and settlement history, but are independent destinations within the wider Branau travel destination.
