In Mánfa itself, prior telephone arrangements are required to visit the interior of the Árpád-era church. Vágotpuszta offers a particular connection to hiking: the settlement is administratively part of Mánfa and lies in the Mecsek, where hiking trails converge. There is also a cycling route and a memorial site with local historical significance. For planning, it is worth considering the routes and the church visit separately.

Hiking and Cycling near Mánfa

Vágotpuszta is a tiny settlement in the Mecsek consisting of just a few houses. Hiking trails meet there; routes for youth hikes and endurance tours also pass through. Vágotpuszta is also on a popular cycling route that starts in Pécs, passes through Magyarszék and Magyarhertelend, and returns to Pécs.

The Szent Imre spring is near the destination. It can be reached from both Mánfa and Magyarszék via the Mecseki Zöldtúra. As trail conditions can change, check them before your hike.

Another route is 34.16 kilometres long and runs from Dömörkapu via the Árpád-era church and Mánfa cemetery to the bus station in Szászvár. Before setting out, check the current trail markers and conditions. The two route descriptions have different focuses: the spring route names two starting points via the Mecseki Zöldtúra; the 34.16-kilometre route specifies its length, intermediate points and endpoint.

Local History and Remembrance

Vágotpuszta’s history is also clearly defined: after 4 November 1956, the settlement was a gathering place for Mecsek resistance fighters who fought against the occupiers. Its small size and location in the Mecsek thus stand alongside a specific historical role.

Another memorial site in Mánfa is the memorial park at 79 Fábián Béla Street. Fábián Béla was born in Pécs and grew up in the house at this address in Mánfa. In February 1945, he was killed when the Dráva Bridge in Barcs was blown up. His biography thus connects his birthplace, Pécs, the house in Mánfa and the place of his death, Barcs.

The Church and Planning Your Visit

The Árpád-era church is a notable historic site in Mánfa. If you would like to visit its interior, prior telephone arrangements are required. Before travelling, check the municipal visitor information for current contact details. The route that passes the church does not replace the arrangements required to visit its interior.

Another specifically named place is the playground at 22 Óvoda Street. It opened in 2008 and was made from natural materials.

A Distinct Cultural Setting in Baranya

In the wider destination of Baranya, Pécs offers its own cultural and historical focus. The Early Christian Necropolis of Sopianae includes decorated tombs from the 4th century: underground burial chambers with above-ground memorial chapels adorned with Christian wall paintings. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter includes the “Golden Age of Zsolnay” and “Pink Exhibition” displays, as well as an exhibition on the family and factory history. These cultural sites in Pécs provide a regional context alongside the specific routes and historic places in Mánfa.
