Komló is best explored through its mining history and the city’s cultural institutions. The collections introduce you to natural history and local heritage, while memorials and open-air exhibitions across the city highlight its mining legacy. Theater, events, and local craft traditions add to the cultural picture. You can shape your stay around different interests: exhibitions, architectural history, or event dates.

Museums and Natural History

The exhibitions at the KomlóVerzum Visitor Center and the museum collection are open to everyone during opening hours, with admission charged. The József Attila City Library and Museum Collection presents local heritage, natural science, and changing exhibitions. Check opening hours before you travel.

The museum collection documents natural science research in Komló and the surrounding area. It includes an archive, a rock collection, a paleontological collection, a Microlepidoptera collection, archaeological finds, and a specialist library. The permanent exhibition “A Mecsek természetvilága” presents the natural world of the Mecsek. Komló thus offers a look at both local research topics and an exhibition on the nature of the Mecsek. Before your visit, also check whether the permanent exhibition is currently on display.

Mining History, Architecture, and Crafts

Memorials to the mining history are spread throughout the city, as are open-air exhibitions featuring machinery. Komló’s inventory of cultural assets includes patience bottles connected with its mining past, made by Farkas Gábor. Another facet of local craft culture is preserved by the Díszítőművészeti Műhely: founded in 1978, it creates, teaches, and preserves embroidery motifs known locally and across the county.

Jánosi Engel Adolf Castle is a late eclectic-style building dating from 1900. It has been protected at the national level since September 2011 and is largely preserved in its original form. At the same time, it is currently unused and in poor condition. Another sight in Komló is the Hasmányi Church, a Gothic church ruin dating from the 13th century.

Theater and Events

The Komlói Theater and Concert Hall opened on November 5, 1982. It serves as a venue for performances by amateur and professional theaters as well as artistic groups. One practical detail to consider when choosing a performance: from every seat in the auditorium, performances can be seen and heard clearly.

The International Komló Sausage-Stuffing Festival takes place every year in early February. The 15th edition was announced for February 7, 2026. Participating teams take an active part rather than simply attending as spectators. Komlói Bányásznapok is Komló’s largest culture event celebrating tradition: the multi-day festival honors the city’s mining past and includes concerts, family activities, exhibitions, and community events. The events therefore differ in both their focus and format. Check dates and programs before planning your trip around a festival.

Local Flavor
