A gentle spring walk through blooming sand dunes and a summer children’s ceramics camp offer different experiences in Pirtó. One draws attention to the local flora and fauna, while the other focuses on working with clay. Their seasonal emphasis can help you choose the right time to travel.

Spring and ceramics in Pirtó

The Kiskunság National Park has announced a gentle spring walk for families with young children in the Pirtói-homokbuckás nature reserve. The yellow hiking trail winds between sand dunes dotted with spring flowers and offers the chance to observe the characteristic flora and fauna. As this activity is associated with spring, check the national park’s current event calendar before making plans.

One of the summer activities listed for Pirtó is a children’s ceramics camp with overnight stays. It is led by Krebsné Tuska Zsuzsanna, a ceramic artist and teacher who lives in Pirtó. The children make ceramics, vessels and clay sculptures using hand-building and pottery-wheel techniques. Unlike the walk, this activity centers on creating things with clay. If you are considering the camp as a reason to travel, check the current dates in advance.

In the wider Bács-Kiskun destination

The wider Bács-Kiskun destination offers its own themes of culture and history. The Tiszaalpár, Földvár educational trail presents the history of the Bronze Age fortification of Tiszaalpári Földvár and the way of life of people in the Bronze Age. The archaeological site is specially protected in Bács-Kiskun; this designation was made under Decree 3/2003. (I. 25.) NKÖM. In Tiszaalpár, a reconstruction of an Árpád-era village, built to mark the millennium, also depicts the settlement structure discovered during local excavations.

At the Kiskunhalas Lace House and Lace Museum, visitors can learn about the history of Halas lace, which began in 1902. They can admire centuries-old lacework and watch the lace-making process. Cifrapalota currently serves as an exhibition venue for the Kecskemét Katona József Museum.

Educational trails and nature knowledge in Bács-Kiskun

The Boróka educational trail in Bugac is 1,100 metres long and combines information panels with interactive features, including a forest xylophone and a play telescope. The educational trail about blue-green algae at Lake Szelidi has a different focus: its twelve information stations cover the lake’s development, the properties of its water, the organisms that live there and the wildlife of the surrounding area. Lake Szelidi is a natural oxbow lake that developed from a branch of the Danube after the Ice Age. The trail is accessible on foot and by bicycle year-round; local conditions may change.

For information about educational trails, visiting protected areas, ecotourism programs and forest schools, the Természet Háza in Kecskemét is the visitor center for Kiskunság National Park. The directions to the Pásztormúzeum offer another practical guide: a dirt road leads there on foot from the Puszta Kapuja Information Center, a distance of about 1.5 km. This is an approximate distance, not a walking time.
