Izsák combines nature at Kolon-tó with educational trails, birdwatching, and a strong Sárfehér tradition. The museum and events also offer insights into local history and culture. Which of these themes you want to shape your stay may already play a role when choosing accommodation.
Educational trails at Kolon-tó
Kolon-tó is considered the most important wetland in the Danube–Tisza Interfluve. Many heron species found in Hungary have ideal nesting sites there. The rooftop terrace of the Kolon-tavi Fürkésző Oktatóközpont offers panoramic views of the lake. The center also has a free, publicly accessible digital educational trail with seven stops. You can reach the center via an approximately 400-meter-long dirt track beside the football pitch in Izsák.
The Aqua Colun educational trail starts at the sports field in Izsák and runs along the edge of the reed belt to a viewpoint. Together with its associated observation towers and viewing points, it offers glimpses of the wildlife at Kolon-tó. Check the route and visitor access options before your visit.
The Bikatorok educational trail at Kolon-tó near Izsák is three kilometers long. From Izsák, it can be reached via a yellow-marked hiking trail to the western side of the lake, and it can be walked year-round. The observation tower is currently closed due to the risk of accidents. When choosing a trail, the differences between the routes can help you decide; for Bikatorok, you should also take the tower closure into account.
Birdlife and the Madárvárta
The Kolon-tavi Madárvárta building was constructed in 1920 and became the property of Kiskunság National Park in 1999. As part of the national park’s educational program, the Madárvárta holds open days featuring demonstrations of bird ringing. Confirm that the program is available before visiting.
For small groups, the Madárvárta offers nomadic camping and nature-study field exercises using the equipment available there. Confirm participation in advance. This can help you decide whether you would prefer to focus on an educational trail and its viewing points or a group activity with field exercises.
The Sárfehér tradition and events
The Izsáki Sárfehér Napok is named after a local grape variety and was established in 1936. Its three-day program includes exhibitions of handicrafts and agricultural products, as well as cultural events. If you want to plan your stay around the event, check the dates and program details for the relevant edition.
Every year, local and visiting participants compete in the Tésztamajális in a contest featuring traditional Hungarian pasta dishes. The competition takes place at the Vino restaurant and in its garden. Check the date for your intended travel year before planning around it.
The Pálinka- és Helytörténeti Múzeum offers insights into the old traditions of pálinka production and local history. A museum visit therefore offers a different focus from the educational trails: here, production traditions and local history take center stage.
More nature experiences in Bács-Kiskun
The wider destination of Bács-Kiskun also offers distinctive nature experiences. In Bugac, the Boróka educational trail is 1,100 meters long; its features include information boards and interactive stops such as a forest xylophone and a play telescope. At Lake Szelid, twelve stops on the blue-green algae trail cover the lake’s development, the properties of its water, the organisms living there, and the wildlife in the surrounding area. This trail is accessible on foot and by bicycle year-round.
