A ceramic plaque on SzabadsĂĄg tĂ©r tells the story of Lajosmizse. In the surrounding area, some of the original forms of the sand-ridge landscape have been preserved, including numerous smaller sand dunes and ridges. The town’s history and landscape thus offer two different perspectives on the destination.

Lakes, green spaces and protected nature

Iskola-tĂł and FĂŒzes-tĂł (HorgĂĄsztĂł), along with their surroundings, are under local protection in Lajosmizse. FĂŒzes-tĂł is used for recreation and sport fishing. At Iskola-tĂł, a large part of the water is covered with reeds. Ducks and reed warblers in particular nest there; occasionally, 8 to 10 swans can be seen on the water. Sightings at Iskola-tĂł are naturally variable: swans are not there all the time, but are seen only occasionally.

The Központi park is also among the town’s protected green spaces. Nearly 140 plane trees and horse chestnuts along the main road are under local protection as well. Those who take in the landscape and townscape will find a range of scales: sand formations outside the built-up area, protected waters and reeds, and trees and a park within the town.

Churches and local history

The Roman Catholic Szent-Lajos Church was designed and built in 1896 by architect Kåroly Bachmann in the eclectic style. Its main altar and finely carved statues are examples of Tyrolean woodcarving. The Pusztatemplom represents another historical period: it is an early Gothic church from the late 14th century that stood in the puszta, outside the inhabited area. Together with the ceramic plaque on Szabadsåg tér, it offers an overview spanning local history and medieval architectural history.

Lajosmizse is a transfer station on railway line 142, Budapest–Lajosmizse–KecskemĂ©t. If you are considering taking the train, check the current timetable for your planned travel dates; the line information alone does not indicate current departure times.

More topics in the wider destination of BĂĄcs-Kiskun

The wider destination of BĂĄcs-Kiskun offers additional cultural and nature-related topics. In TiszaalpĂĄr, the TiszaalpĂĄr, FöldvĂĄr nature trail presents the history of the Bronze Age fortification and the way of life of people in the Bronze Age. TiszaalpĂĄri FöldvĂĄr is a highly protected archaeological site in BĂĄcs-Kiskun; it was designated under Regulation 3/2003. (I. 25.) NKÖM. Another historical presentation in TiszaalpĂĄr is a reconstruction of a village from the ÁrpĂĄd era, built to mark the millennium. It depicts the settlement layout discovered during local excavations.

In Kiskunhalas, the focus is on another cultural craft: at the Kiskunhalasi CsipkehĂĄz and CsipkemĂșzeum, visitors can learn about the history of Halas lace, which began in 1902, admire lacework dating back centuries and see the lace-making process. Nature trails offer natural history topics with different areas of focus. The BorĂłka nature trail in Bugac is 1,100 metres long and combines information boards with interactive stations, including a forest xylophone and a play telescope. At Lake Szelid, a nature trail with 12 information stations explains the lake’s development, its water characteristics, the organisms living there and the wildlife in the surrounding area. Lake Szelid is a natural oxbow lake that developed after the Ice Age from a branch of the Danube. The trail is accessible on foot and by bicycle year-round; local conditions can change, so it is worth checking before setting out.

For information about nature trails, visiting protected areas, ecotourism programs and forest schools, the Természet Håza in Kecskemét is a point of contact: it is the visitor centre of Kiskunsåg National Park. These regional offerings complement your own exploration of Lajosmizse, but do not replace the decision about which local highlights best suit your stay.
