Foktő combines a location directly on the Danube with a local history reflected in protected churches, carved wooden figures and a tájház completed in 2019. If you are looking for a hotel in Foktő, you can start by choosing between two interests: a stay by the river and the town’s historical traces. This combination gives you a practical starting point for deciding whether Foktő suits your stay.

Location and how to get there

Foktő lies in the region between the Danube and the Tisza, directly on the Danube and about five kilometres from Kalocsa. You can reach the town via Main Road 51 and the nearest bridges at Szekszárd, Dunaföldvár or Baja. The ferry from the Géderlak–Paks direction is another option. Check whether it is currently operating before you travel if you plan to use this route.

Churches and local history

The first Roman Catholic church in Foktő was consecrated in 1757. The Catholic church is protected as a historic monument, as is the Reformed church in the town centre.

Three carved wooden statues stand in the centre of Foktő, depicting Magyarok Nagyasszonya, Árpád vezér and Teremtő Krisztus. A few old gravestone posts (gombosfa), carved locally, still stand in the cemetery in Foktő. Their shared material connects the figures and the grave markers, while their locations and forms set them apart. The tájház in Foktő was completed in 2019. As a house devoted to local history, it provides its own cultural point of reference alongside the religious and carved heritage.

More topics in the wider Bács-Kiskun destination

The wider destination of Bács-Kiskun offers additional, distinct cultural and nature-related themes. In Tiszaalpár, the Tiszaalpár, Földvár educational trail introduces the history of the Bronze Age fortification and the way of life of people in the Bronze Age. A reconstruction of an Árpád-era village in Tiszaalpár depicts the settlement structure discovered during local excavations. At Lake Szelid, the blue-green algae educational trail uses twelve information stations to explain the lake’s development, the properties of its water, the organisms living there and the wildlife of the surrounding area. The trail is accessible on foot and by bicycle year-round; local conditions may change. The Boróka educational trail in Bugac is 1,100 metres long and features information panels and activity stations, including a forest xylophone and a play telescope. Lake Szelid itself is a natural oxbow lake that developed from a branch of the Danube after the Ice Age.

Bács-Kiskun also offers other cultural highlights: at the Kiskunhalasi Csipkeház and Csipkemúzeum, you can learn about the history of Halas lace, which began in 1902, admire lacework dating back centuries and watch the lace-making process. Cifrapalota currently serves as an exhibition venue for the Kecskeméti Katona József Museum.
