Puerto Cortés offers a range of options for your stay: activities on Laguna de Alvarado, the urban Playas Municipales, and other nearby beaches. There is also a cultural offering and activities in the Río Tulián watershed at the municipal level. If you are looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide which of these interests will shape your trip.
Lagoon trips and activities on the water
Kayak, canoe, and motorboat trips are offered on Laguna de Alvarado. Special tours go to the Canal de Chamber and the mangrove area. The options range from different kinds of water trips to excursions with a specific destination. When planning a visit to the lagoon, you can distinguish between these offerings based on whether the type of trip or a particular place on the lagoon is your main focus.
Activities mentioned for weekends also include boat trips, birdwatching, sport fishing, and canoeing. The options therefore cover both activities on the water and nature observation and fishing. Laguna de Alvarado is accessible from Playa Municipal and Travesía beach. These access points provide a separate reference point when planning a visit to the lagoon, alongside the question of which activity you would like to choose.
Urban beaches and Playa de Cieneguita
The Playas Municipales, formerly known as Playa de la Coca Cola, are located in Barrio El Porvenir. Visitor parking, public restrooms, and showers are available there. The urban Playa Municipal is also used for various sports, as well as running and walking along the shore. The beach therefore offers a different kind of stay from trips and tours on the lagoon: the focus here is on activities along the shore and various sports.
Playa de Cieneguita is located near Puerto Cortés on the CA-13 road toward Omoa. The beach has white sand. Playa de Cieneguita is described as having numerous restaurants, large parking areas, kiosks for rent, restrooms, showers, and security services. If these amenities are important for your visit, check their current availability in advance. Cieneguita is another beach option, with listed facilities that differ from those mentioned for the Playas Municipales.
Culture and activities in the municipality
A municipal post from 2023 describes Paseo Histórico Familiar as an event held at the end of every month. The activities highlight Puerto Cortés’s cultural diversity. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance. This lets you add a cultural focus to beach and lagoon activities without basing your plans solely on a particular event date.
The Río Tulián watershed also offers a distinct focus on nature and activities within the municipality it serves. It is considered suitable for mountain biking and birdwatching, and is also the municipality’s main source of drinking water. These activities are therefore associated with the watershed at the municipal level. Those interested in nature observation will find a different perspective here than on boat trips on Laguna de Alvarado.
Plan your stay and hotel search
These places and offerings cater to different interests and locations. When choosing a hotel, consider which location suits your own plans for your visit. This way, you can align your accommodation search with the activities you actually plan to do, rather than assuming that a particular property has certain facilities or a special location.
