Gravel Bay can be explored through three distinct themes: beaches, jewelry making, and an animatronic dinosaur show. This lets you think of the area in terms of what interests you most on a trip—coastline, craftsmanship, or a themed exhibition.

Craftsmanship and Animatronic Dinosaurs

At the Stone Castle Cameo Factory in Gravel Bay, visitors can watch local artists making jewelry as part of a tour. The focus is therefore on the production process and the artists’ work. If you would like to plan this visit specifically, check in advance whether a tour time fits your itinerary.

Jurassic Giants Roatan features animatronic dinosaurs on land and in water. The figures on display also include the native Honduran Prehistoric Giant Ground Sloth. The two attractions offer different experiences: at the Cameo Factory, you can watch jewelry being made; at Jurassic Giants Roatan, you can see animatronic figures.

Beaches as Another Connection to the Area

Beaches are also part of Gravel Bay. They add a coastal aspect to the area’s craft and themed attractions. When deciding what to do, you can consider whether you are most interested in the beach, seeing jewelry being made, or a dinosaur show. These interests can help guide your choice of destination without imposing a fixed order for your stay.

Within the Wider Destination of Roatan

The wider Roatan area also offers cultural and nature-related interests. The Roatan Museum was founded in 1992 by the resort’s owners, with guidance and expertise from the Honduran Institute of Anthropology. It presents the history and culture of the Bay Islands through artifacts, murals, maps, and historical documents. The focus there is on the history of the island group.

Orchids, medicinal plants, exotic spice plants, fruit and nut trees, and a Chocolate Tree grow in the Carambola Botanical Garden. Activities there include hiking, ecotours, birdwatching, and nature studies. This combines plant diversity with a range of nature-related interests that differ from the jewelry craftsmanship and dinosaur show in Gravel Bay.

Arch's Iguana and Marine Park is a wildlife sanctuary dedicated to protecting coral and marine life. One account of the park puts the number of free-roaming iguanas at more than 4,000. The history of Punta Gorda also adds to the wider Roatan context: the area is considered the Garifuna’s arrival point in Central America. The ship that brought them there after the English took them from San Vicente following their rebellion arrived there. Punta Gorda’s predominantly Garifuna population has long been associated with artisanal fishing.

Visitors can reach Roatan on scheduled flights, cruise ships, domestic flights from the mainland, and a ferry from La Ceiba. Check current routes and operators before your trip.
