Narrow, poorly signposted roads make it difficult to find your way around Coxen Hole. At the same time, the town offers numerous local eateries and souvenir shops. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the town itself from the wider destination of Roatán: you can consider whether the urban setting matters to you, as well as which cultural and natural attractions you are interested in beyond it.

Coxen Hole: Local attractions and getting around

Fort Consolation overlooks the Town Center of the Port of Roatan in Coxen Hole. Together with the local eateries and souvenir shops, it paints a picture that places the town and harbor alongside visitor amenities. The roads in Coxen Hole are narrow and poorly signposted, so visitors and newcomers should take care when getting around. As road conditions may change, this information is not a guarantee of the current situation.

The Roatan Museum is located near Coxen Hole. Its artifacts, murals, maps, and documents reflect the culture and history of the Bay Islands. Cheryl Galindo founded the museum in 1992. If you are planning a visit, check access arrangements in advance.

Roatán: Culture, nature, and diverse interests

Beyond Coxen Hole, the wider destination of Roatán offers other distinct attractions. Carambola Botanical Garden brings together orchids, medicinal plants, and exotic spice plants with fruit and nut trees, as well as a Chocolate Tree. Activities at the garden include hiking, ecotours, birdwatching, and nature studies. Alongside Coxen Hole’s local visitor amenities, these offer further interests for a trip to Roatán, focusing on plants and observing nature.

The wildlife and nature attractions also differ. Arch's Iguana and Marine Park is a protected area dedicated to protecting coral and marine life; the park is said to be home to more than 4,000 free-roaming iguanas. At Gumbalimba Park, activities include walks through tropical gardens, encounters with free-roaming wildlife, and exploring a cave with a pirate history. The attractions therefore have distinct focuses: marine life conservation and iguanas at Arch's Park, garden trails and wildlife encounters at Gumbalimba Park, and plant diversity and nature activities at Carambola Botanical Garden.

Punta Gorda brings together historical and cultural themes. It is considered the Garifuna arrival point in Central America: the ship that brought them there after the English took them from San Vicente following their rebellion arrived in this town. Most of Punta Gorda’s population is Garifuna, and artisanal fishing has a long tradition there. The Punta Gorda Carnival is an April celebration associated with Garifuna traditions, Punta music, and dance.

Another attraction on Roatán is the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS). Colleges, universities, and high schools from abroad visit the institute year-round to study tropical marine ecosystems and bottlenose dolphins. RIMS also hosts college and high school groups from abroad for structured programs on marine science, coral reefs, oceanography, biology, and bottlenose dolphins. These educational offerings are intended for the groups mentioned and have a different focus from the garden, wildlife, and cultural attractions.

The landscape, too, should be considered as part of the wider Roatán destination: it includes beaches and lush coastal vegetation. Visitors can reach Roatán on scheduled flights, cruise ships, domestic flights from the mainland, or a ferry from La Ceiba. If you are considering taking the ferry, check the route and operator in advance. These travel options describe how to reach Roatán; they do not, on their own, establish a route within Coxen Hole.

The nearby Roatan Museum connects the town with the history of the Bay Islands; the other gardens, parks, and educational offerings mentioned are part of the wider destination.
