Kenscoff brings together three clearly distinct themes: the agroforestry-focused Wynne Farm Ecological Reserve, Parc national La Visite with its extensive natural landscape, and Fort Jacques as a historic landmark from Haiti’s post-independence era. If you are planning a stay in Kenscoff, you can choose your focus based on whether land use and environmental education, hiking landscapes and nature observation, or the history of independent Haiti is most important to you.

Wynne Farm: Agroforestry and Environmental Education

Wynne Farm Ecological Reserve lies in the mountains of Kenscoff at an elevation of 6,000 feet and covers 30 acres of land. Terraces and forest shape the site; because of these features, the reserve is considered a model of agroforestry. Agroforestry combines agricultural use with shrubs or trees. At the reserve, the terraces and forest give this classification a concrete form.

The reserve is dedicated to environmental protection through education. Wynne Farm presents a photo exhibition featuring photographs of insects, birds, reptiles, and amphibians from Haiti. The exhibition complements the view of the terraces and forest with depictions of different groups of animals. For nature enthusiasts, environmental education, land use, and Haiti’s wildlife are all part of the site’s appeal.

Parc national La Visite: Landscape and Nature Observation

Parc national La Visite is a national park covering an area of 11,426 hectares; its legal designation dates from April 4, 1983. It extends across six communes; Kenscoff lies on its northern side, and the park also reaches into the area of Kenscoff. This makes its geographical scope different from that of Wynne Farm, which covers 30 acres: the national park encompasses several communes, while the reserve describes a single site with an agroforestry focus.

The park’s landscape features include waterfalls, caves, forest trails, and mountain viewpoints. The park is considered suitable for hiking. These features distinguish it from Wynne Farm: in La Visite, trails and varied landscape elements shape the nature experience, while at the reserve, terraces and forest define its agroforestry character.

In January 2005, experts recorded 14 endemic bird species among approximately 50 bird species in the area of Parc national La Visite. This survey adds a natural history dimension to the description of the landscape.

Fort Jacques and Haiti’s History

Fort Jacques brings Haiti’s history to Kenscoff. It was built shortly after Haiti’s independence at the direction of Jean-Jacques Dessalines to protect the young nation from possible attacks by French colonists. The specific reason for its construction links the site to the early history of independent Haiti and sets it apart from agroforestry or the national park. For travelers who want to include historical context alongside nature in their choices, Fort Jacques offers a distinct theme within Kenscoff.
