Kardamas is located in the western coastal region of the Peloponnese, three kilometres south of Amaliada. Two details help establish its location: Amaliada lies to the north, while the Patras–Pyrgos National Road runs west of Kardamas. Together, its position south of Amaliada and west of the road give a concise picture of its geographical location. This helps identify Kardamas as a specific destination when looking for a holiday apartment; its historical connections offer another perspective on the village.

Two accounts of the place name

Two accounts of the origin of the name Kardamas coexist. According to one, the place name derives from watercress that grew along the banks of the Mylavlákos River. Another account says that the river associated with Kardamas was called Kárdamon. The explanations emphasise different things: the first links the name to a plant by the river, while the second connects it to a name for the waterway. For anyone interested in local stories about place names, this difference makes the connection to the village tangible. The two versions can be read as alternative accounts: watercress on the riverbank in one, the name Kárdamon in the other.

The Old Schoolhouse and remembrance

Another way into the history of Kardamas is through the Old Schoolhouse of the Municipality of Kardamas in the Prefecture of Ilia. In 1993, it was designated a historic monument under special state protection. The designation recognises its contribution to preserving historical memory and its close connection with the memories of the region’s residents. The focus is therefore not only on the historic building, but also on its significance for the memory and recollections of local people. For travellers interested in local history and remembrance, it offers a specific point of reference.

Kardamas on a themed route

Another way to place the village in context is the route “Ο Δρόμος προς τη Δόξα: Ακολουθώντας τα ίχνη της μεγαλοπρεπούς Ιεράς Οδού των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων”. Kardamas is listed as stop 6 on this route. The title can be rendered as “The Road to Glory: Following the Traces of the Grand Sacred Way of the Olympic Games” and indicates the theme of the route. Together with the Old Schoolhouse, this route connection offers another perspective: one places Kardamas within a themed route, while the other concerns a monument connected with the residents’ historical memory. Both provide different historical points of reference for the village.

Palouki in its regional context

Palouki is also part of the region’s history. It was the port of Kardamas and is described as one of the oldest ports in the western Peloponnese, as well as an extension of Kourouta. Before it was called Palouki, the place was known as Paralia Kardamá. The wider travel area therefore brings together several distinct connections to names and history: the accounts of the name Kardamas, Palouki’s former name, and its historical connection as a port. Its description as an extension of Kourouta adds to this picture. This links the history of Kardamas with another regional reference, while keeping the accounts of its name and the Old Schoolhouse in view.
