Krioneri is a coastal town whose history has been shaped by both the railway and the sea. The seafront stretches from Agios Nikolaos Varasovas to Kavourotrypa Beach. Nearby is Varasova, a 917-metre-high mountain with Byzantine chapels, monasteries and hermitages. These different features offer distinct options for planning a trip: the coast, the history of transport, or the mountain landscape.

Coast and Activities in Krioneri

Krioneri’s seafront stretches from Agios Nikolaos Varasovas to Kavourotrypa Beach. Krioneri has an organised beach with several shops. Diving and fishing are also possible in Krioneri. The beach, diving and fishing offer different ways to enjoy the town; nearby Varasova adds activities in a mountainous setting.

Railway, Pier and Ancient Harbour

The historic Agrinio–Messolonghi–KryonĂ©ri railway line ended at KryonĂ©ri Beach. At KryonĂ©ri’s pier, railway carriages were loaded onto a ship to be transported to Patras. The beach and pier are thus part of a connected transport history: the line reached the coast, and the carriages were to continue from there by ship. Krioneri is also described as the ancient harbour of Kalydon’s â€œÎ Î”Ï„ÏÎźÎ”ÏƒÏƒÎ±Ï‚â€. This ancient name is a different historical reference from the railway and shipping, and offers another perspective on the town’s past.

Varasova: Mountain Landscape and History

Nearby Varasova is 917 metres high and is known as the “Holy Mountain” of Aetolia-Acarnania. This is due in part to its many Byzantine chapels, monasteries—including the well-known hermitage of Saint Nicholas—and hermitages on hard-to-reach slopes. Varasova has been declared a historic site and is noted for its exceptional scenic beauty. The mountain is suitable for climbing and hiking and offers panoramic views of the Ionian Sea. The nearby mountain thus brings religious buildings and history together with landscape and outdoor activities.

The activities can be distinguished by where they take place: diving and fishing are options in Krioneri, while hiking and climbing are associated with nearby Varasova. Visitors primarily interested in the coast and beach will find different points of interest from those drawn to the mountain landscape and its religious architecture. Fresh fish and seafood are also served on the Krioneri coast, right by the sea and in the shade of Varasova.
