Architecture and Museum

The Archontiko Palaiologina is a Byzantine architectural monument built of stone and topped with a tiled roof. It was probably built around 1400 by Thomas Palaiologos; it subsequently passed into the possession of his brother Konstantinos.

The Municipal Museum of the Holocaust of Kalavryta is located in the former school building, which was designated a historic monument by the Ministry of Culture in 1986. The museum displays personal belongings of those executed, photographs, historical documents and artworks inspired by their sacrifice. The two sites offer different historical perspectives: the Archontiko focuses on architectural form and ownership history, while the museum presents testimonies and art related to those executed.

The Kalavryta Massacre, also known as the Holocaust of Kalavryta, took place during the occupation on Kapi Hill, 500 meters east of the town. Another historical connection leads to the Monastery of Agia Lavra. It was the site of military events during the uprising of 1821. The proclamation of the Greek Revolution by Germanos of Patras is said to have taken place beneath the dome of its church. Odontotos and Ski Center

The historic Odontotos rack railway connects Diakofto with Kalavrita and has run through the Vouraikos Gorge since 1896. The route is 22.35 kilometers long, crosses 49 bridges and reaches Kalavrita in 60 minutes. The route length and number of bridges indicate its scale; the journey time provides a clear time frame. On March 12, 2026, the operator announced that regular service was suspended until further notice. Therefore, check the service status before your trip before making firm plans to ride the train.

The Kalavrita Ski Center is located on the northwest side of Mount Chelmos, near Kalavrita. Its slopes extend from 1,700 meters at Xerokambos to 2,340 meters at Neraidorachi. The 1,700-meter elevation at Xerokambos and the 2,340-meter elevation at Neraidorachi mark a difference of 640 meters. Operating conditions vary; take this into account when planning your visit.
