Aroanía, also known as Sopoto, combines a village scene shaped by plane trees, fountains, and old mansions with a rich cultural history. The stone primary school, family heirlooms in the folklore museum, and churches with specific historical details offer different perspectives on the area. You can get to know Aroanía as you plan your trip through its village life, architectural history, and regional landscape.

Village Life and Culture

Plane trees, clear water, stone fountains, and old mansions shape the area. On the village square, a traditional café serves regional specialties beneath a hundred-year-old plane tree. In winter, hot chocolate is on the menu; in summer, the sweet treat “Submarine.” Guests can play backgammon there or try the traditional regional game δηλωτη. If you plan to visit the café, it is best to check its current availability locally.

Aroanía’s stone primary school now serves as a cultural space. In summer, the village association shows films in its courtyard. If a screening is important to your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance. The folklore museum in Aroanía preserves numerous family heirlooms that illustrate the history of the region and the everyday lives of people in Sopoto. Two different cultural perspectives thus sit side by side: the village association’s film screenings and a collection that connects family heirlooms with regional history and everyday life.

Churches and Historical Traces

The Church of Evangelismos tis Theotokou stands on Aroanía’s central square. According to an inscription, it was built and painted in 1703. Agios Georgios is a three-aisled domed basilica and is considered 50 to 80 years older than Evangelismos tis Theotokou. The two churches are thus described in different ways: a construction date is recorded for Evangelismos, while Agios Georgios is described by its age difference and architectural form. “Three-aisled” refers to three naves; the dome is another explicitly named feature.

The history of the Greek School of Sopotou adds another perspective. It was founded in 1796 with funds from the bequest of Athanasios Tsipiiras. Tsipiiras was a merchant from Patras and was himself from Sopotou. This adds an educational history to the history of the churches and architecture, connecting the area with the biography of a merchant.

The Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni lies near Sopoto. According to an old inscription, the church was built in 1616; the inscription no longer survives.
