Travel themes in Achaia range from the Odontotos journey through the Vouraikos Gorge to archaeological finds, lakes and the history of winemaking. When looking for hotels, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: a particular journey, cultural history, or nature and landscapes? The following places offer different perspectives on these themes.

Odontotos and the Vouraikos Gorge

The Odontotos journey covers 22 kilometers through the Vouraikos Gorge and the village of Zachlorou. The gorge and the wider Chelmos massif have been protected as the Chelmos-Vouraikos National Park since 2009. This gives you two ways to explore the Vouraikos Gorge: as part of the Odontotos journey described here, and as a landscape protected together with the Chelmos massif.

Cave of the Lakes and Lake Tsivlou

The Cave of the Lakes and Lake Tsivlou each offer a distinct landscape. The Cave of the Lakes contains a series of cascading lakes on three different levels. Lake Tsivlou lies at an altitude of 800 meters and covers 200 acres. Its shore is considered by many to be suitable for picnics and relaxation. The cave stands out for its tiered series of lakes, while Lake Tsivlou’s altitude and shoreline provide different points of reference.

Cultural history in Patras

Patras adds several points of cultural and historical interest to the landscape themes. The Roman Odeon of Patras is protected, open to visitors, and fully accessible to people with disabilities and those with mobility or other access difficulties. As access arrangements may change, check them before your visit. Patras Castle was founded in the second half of the 6th century AD; the Archaeological Museum of Patras opened to the public in 2009. These dates refer to two different events: the castle’s foundation and the year the museum opened to the public.

Archaeological finds at Voudeni

The Mycenaean cemetery at Voudeni has yielded more than 800 vases as well as other objects, including bronze tools, weapons, jewelry and seals. The finds therefore extend beyond pottery to include a variety of object types. Those interested in Mycenaean history will find a clearly defined archaeological focus here. Unlike the history of the castle’s foundation or the year the museum opened, the focus at Voudeni is on material finds.

Winemaking history and architecture

The history of winemaking can also be a travel theme in Achaia: the buildings of the Achaia Clauss winery in Messatida form an architectural museum. The winery houses barrels of Mavrodafni dating from 1873. The architecture and the historic barrels offer two distinct points of interest. The year 1873 refers to the Mavrodafni in the barrels; the architectural character applies to the buildings. This distinguishes the architectural context from a specific historical reference to wine.
