A circular burial chamber measuring 5.80 metres in diameter and a 14-metre-long entrance corridor give the Tholos Tomb of Angelika precisely measurable dimensions. It is the largest and best-preserved example of Mycenaean funerary architecture in the Cyclades. The diameter describes the circular burial chamber, while the corridor reveals a second, clearly quantified dimension of the structure.

Granite, Watercourses and Coastal Landscape

Mykonos is designated a landscape of particular natural beauty. Its landforms include rocky granite outcrops shaped by wind and rain. Seasonal watercourses are associated with rare flora and migratory birds.

The wetlands of Choulakia and Rema Panormou are also part of the natural landscape: they are regarded as ecologically interesting ecosystems on Mykonos. The beaches add their own character to the coast. Elia Beach retains its natural beauty; Fokos Beach is considered almost untouched.

Traces of Prehistory

Near Ftelia is an organised settlement dating to Late Neolithic II, from 5000 to 4500 BC. The population relied on a mixed economy: farming and livestock rearing were combined with food gathering and fishing.

Archaeological finds from Ftelia also include a Neolithic clay figurine called “The Lady of Mykonos”.

Museums and Historic Houses

Construction of the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos began in 1899, making it one of the oldest museums in Greece. Lena’s House is a 19th-century Mycenaean townhouse in the centre of Mykonos Town, Chora, in the Tria Pigadia district. In recent years, the Archaeological Museum has hosted temporary exhibitions ranging from archaeology to contemporary art.

The Aegean Maritime Museum is housed in a traditional 19th-century Cycladic residence in the historic centre of Mykonos Town. Outside, it displays the original mechanism of the Armenistis Lighthouse.
