Antimachia is a small settlement on Kos, 25 kilometres from Kos Town. Kos Hippocrates International Airport (KGS) is located in Antimachia. These are two different points of reference when choosing a holiday apartment: the settlement’s location and its distance from Kos Town. Local historical attractions range from the windmill and museum to the nearby castle; cycling, hiking, nature and food offer further ways to experience Kos.

Windmill, Museum and Fortress History

The Traditional Windmill of Antimachia, also known as Priest’s Windmill or Amallou Windmill, dates from the 19th century and was restored after the 1933 earthquake. Weaving courses are offered at the Antimachia Folk Museum during the winter months; check the operating details before your trip. The windmill and weaving courses appeal to different cultural and historical interests: one is a building with a restoration history, the other a seasonal craft topic.

Antimachia Castle, a medieval fortress built by the Knights of St John in the late Middle Ages, lies four kilometres from the village. Together with the windmill, it offers a second historical perspective: the fortress dates back to the late Middle Ages, while the mill dates from the 19th century.

Cycling and Hiking on Kos

The municipal tourism portal features ten cycling routes on the island of Kos, including completely flat, mountainous, mixed, unpaved and steep routes. When planning, you can therefore take different route profiles into account rather than looking only at the number of routes. Hiking also has a clear point of reference: at 846 metres, Mount Dikeos is the highest mountain on Kos, and a well-maintained, marked hiking trail starts in Zia. The island thus offers a variety of cycling route profiles alongside a hiking trail with a known starting point.

Nature and Food on Kos

On Kos, visitors can taste honey at apiaries open to visitors and learn about the production process first-hand. Another local food specialty is Krasotyri from Kos: this white, PGI-protected cheese is made from sheep’s or goat’s milk and aged for at least one month in grape pomace. This combines the opportunity to see how honey is made with a clearly described island product.

For nature lovers, the Psalidi wetland on Kos offers lush vegetation, established paths for wildlife observation and, seasonally, a refuge for migratory birds. This is a different landscape from the hiking trail on Mount Dikeos: here the focus is on wetlands and wildlife observation, while the other is a marked trail starting in Zia.

Getting to Kos and Bus Services

Local KTEL buses on Kos run from every settlement, with numerous regular connections to Kos Town. If you are also choosing your holiday apartment based on bus connections, check the timetable for your travel dates before planning excursions.
