Hiking trails, five villages and varied stretches of coastline give Kasos its many sides. For trip planning, useful details include a network of hiking and cycling routes, places of note in the island’s history, and a connection between Kasos Airport and Athens Airport.

Hiking Trails and Natural Areas

Kasos Trails is the island’s official hiking and cycling network and a project of the Municipality of Kasos. One specific hiking route, Wild Kasos, runs for 8.6 kilometres from the Monastery of Agios Georgios near Chadies to Agia Marina. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out. The network covers hiking and cycling, while Wild Kasos is listed as a hiking route with a specific distance and two named endpoints.

The natural environment is also characterised by its scale: the Natura 2000 network includes Kasos, the surrounding Kasonisia islets and cliffs, and the adjacent marine area. The area covers a total of 15,700 hectares and is protected for the diversity of its habitat types. Check the protected area’s boundaries and management rules before taking part in activities. Kasos is also an Important Bird Area: rare birds of prey occur here, and the island is a first stop for migratory birds from Africa. Bird sightings are seasonal.

Coastal Places with Distinctive Features

The coastal stretches differ in their described landscape features. Emporios is a small sandy beach next to Fri and is easy to reach by car or on foot. Access and nearby facilities may vary seasonally; check conditions before your visit. Ammoua is a small sandy cove with sunset views. There is a beach bar, which operates seasonally and may change.

Helatros is a sheltered, peaceful beach with pebbles and blue-green water. Beach conditions depend on the season and weather. The sheltered bay of Helatros in southwestern Kasos also has historical significance: Minoan seafarers used it as a harbour. The coastal places therefore bring together different themes—beach characteristics, seasonal conditions and maritime history.

Villages, Churches and Historic Sites

Kasos consists of five villages: Poli, Panagia, Fri, Arvanitohori and Agia Marina. Poli is the island’s oldest settlement and was built on the site of an ancient Mycenaean acropolis. Panagia is known for the interconnected churches of Exi Ekklisies, also called the “Six Churches.” The village names help with orientation, while their respective landmarks and historical associations provide different points of interest.

Above Bouka stands the Church of Agios Spyridon, with four semicircular domes and a wooden iconostasis dating to 1866. The Monastery of Agios Mamas is known for its unique mosaics and wooden icon stands. Ellinokamara Cave served as a place of worship from the Mycenaean to the Hellenistic period and as a refuge during pirate raids. It can be reached on foot from Agia Marina or Arvanitohori; route conditions may change.

Collections and Maritime History

The Archaeological Collection of Kasos displays objects from a broad period, from prehistoric to early Christian times. The Maritime Museum of Kasos focuses on a different subject. Its exhibits include sextants, compasses and other nautical instruments, as well as ship models, watercolours and traditional shipbuilding tools. Comparing the two collections highlights their different themes: archaeological finds spanning several eras on one side, and seafaring and shipbuilding on the other.

Bouka harbour is used for mooring small boats; this use may vary seasonally. For travel to the island, Kasos Airport is connected to Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos). The stated journey time is 1 hour and 15 minutes. Check flight schedules and journey times again before your trip.
