Gourna offers several distinct points of reference for planning a trip: the beach, the village character with its houses, gardens and orchards, and cultural sites in the surrounding area. They are not all in the same place. This makes it easy to distinguish the beach area, the village of Gourna and its surroundings when deciding which part of the destination you want to shape your stay. For a short stay, this distinction matters: a beach amenity, a feature in the village and a chapel in the surrounding area are different points of reference when planning your days and accommodation.

Beach and nearby amenities

Near Gourna Beach, there are tavernas, refreshment stands and minimarkets. These three types of amenities serve different purposes: dining out, getting refreshments or picking up a few things. If you want to plan around a particular business, check in advance whether it will be open during your travel dates.

Houses, gardens and orchards

The village of Gourna has houses with gardens and orchards. This brings the settlement itself into focus alongside the beach area. Gardens and orchards offer a different point of reference from the amenities along the coast. As you plan, consider whether the village itself or the beach area is more important to you as a point of orientation. The houses explicitly place this perspective within the village of Gourna.

Alonaris Festival on 25 July

The Alonaris Festival is described as taking place on 25 July on Gourna Beach, with a demonstration of traditional threshing, free traditional meze and a festival with local dances afterwards. Threshing means separating the grains from the stalks; the demonstration therefore brings a traditional agricultural activity into the programme. The festival combines this demonstration with meze and local dances. If you want to travel specifically for the festival, check before booking whether it is scheduled for your intended stay. This helps distinguish a possible festival date from other considerations about the beach and accommodation.

Panagia Gourlomata near Drymona

Another cultural point of reference lies outside the village: the Chapel of Panagia Gourlomata stands near Drymona, south of Gourna and farther along the coastal road. It was built in the 14th century and has remarkable frescoes. Unlike the festival on the beach, it is a building in the area around Drymona; the two cultural points of reference thus differ in location and form. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether visits are currently possible. 25 July is the festival date, while the 14th century refers to when the chapel was built.

The chapel near Drymona is a cultural point of reference in its own right, separate from the question of where to stay.
