Angariones brings together local religious culture and a culinary festival tradition. Chapels and the central church give the cultural themes concrete names; recurring feast days and an annual village festival add the rhythm of the year and a local dish.

Chapels, Church and Religious Feast Days

Angariones has the chapels of Agios Athanasios and Agia Paraskevi. Marble elements are built into the masonry of the Chapel of Agia Paraskevi. The village’s central church is Agios Georgios. This makes it possible to distinguish a specific architectural detail at one of the chapels from the central church: the marble is in Agia Paraskevi, while Agios Georgios is the central church.

Angariones celebrates the feast of Saint George on April 23 and the feast of the Archangels on November 8. These two dates are clear points on the calendar for religious festivities. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the schedule for the relevant year.

A Village Festival of Food, Music and Dance

Since 2011, the Agios Georgios Cultural Association has held the festival “Μακαρόνες στσ’ Αγκαρυώνες” every year in Angariones. At its heart are αγκαρυωνίτικες μακαρόνες: women from the village prepare them using traditional recipes and serve them to visitors. Music and dance accompany the festival. Unlike the religious feast days, this event explicitly centers on a local dish. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.

Limnos as a Broader Setting

The wider destination of Limnos offers other interests alongside the village perspective, including landscapes, history and regional cuisine. The Ammothines near Katalakkos are a 70-stremma sand dune area inland, away from the coast. Falakra features volcanic formations attributed to the meeting of lava and sea. Every spring and autumn, thousands of migratory birds use Lemnos as a stopover on their long journeys between Europe, Asia and Africa. The difference in timing is clear: bird migration is seasonal, while the dunes and volcanic formations are enduring landscape features.

History also offers a range of points of interest. The present-day castle of Myrina was built in 1186 by Andronikos I Komnenos and covers 144 stremmata. The Treaty of Moudros between Turkey and the Allies was signed in Moudros in 1918. Poliochni is an Early Bronze Age settlement with early forms of social and urban organization. The Early Bronze Age, the construction of the castle and the year 1918 thus represent different historical perspectives on Limnos.

Those interested in food may also want to distinguish between village and island specialties. Lemnos is known for its Kalathaki and Melichloro cheeses, made from sheep’s and goat’s milk. The red wine varieties Limnio and Kalambaki, as well as Muscat of Alexandria, are also produced on Lemnos. By contrast, the annual festival in Angariones centers on αγκαρυωνίτικες μακαρόνες. Together, these examples offer a view of two levels: the village’s festival tradition and Limnos’s regional cheese and wine production.

The eastern beaches of Lemnos are another clearly defined area of interest for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Conditions there are suitable, and organized schools cater to both experienced participants and beginners. Check the schools’ current offerings before making plans.
