Limnia offers several distinct starting points for planning your trip: nearby beaches, the traditional village of Volissos with a Byzantine castle on a hill above the village, and the historic island of Psara, which can be reached from Limniá harbour in under two hours. There are accommodation options and some holiday homes in the village itself. You can therefore focus on the coast, local history or a broader view of Chios.

Nearby beaches

The secluded beaches near Limnia include Limnos, Lampsa and Agia Markella. All three beaches have natural shade, and their waters are considered crystal-clear. These names refer to individual beaches, not to one continuous stretch of beach. Their shared coastal character and distinct locations offer different points to consider when planning a stay around Limnia.

Volissos: village and castle

Volissos is a traditional village close to Limnia. A Byzantine castle stands on a hill above the village. The village and castle offer a different focus from the beaches: here, the character of the place and a historic building take centre stage.

The Volissos Archaeological Collection

The Volissos Archaeological Collection explores the history of Ariousios wine and its trade. Its topics also include amphorae and drinking vessels, the cult of Dionysus, and vessels used at symposia. Visits are possible by appointment in winter; Saturday and Sunday are listed as visiting days in summer. If you plan to visit the collection, check the visiting arrangements in advance.

Psara as a separate point on your itinerary

The historic island of Psara can be reached from Limniá harbour in under two hours. Alongside the nearby beaches and Volissos, it offers a separate island destination with a specific travel time to consider. When planning, you can weigh up whether to focus on Limnia and its surroundings or include Psara as well.

More cultural highlights on Chios

The wider island of Chios offers further distinct cultural highlights. Nea Moni Monastery was built between 1042 and 1056 and is considered an undisputed masterpiece of Byzantine art. Its mosaics are among three surviving collections in Greece from the Middle Byzantine period. This offers an opportunity to focus specifically on religious art and Middle Byzantine mosaics.

The Chios Mastic Museum in Pyrgi adds the culture of mastic to this picture: its permanent exhibition presents traditional knowledge about mastic cultivation. The outdoor exhibition brings visitors into contact with the mastic plant and its natural habitat. The architecture of Mesta and Pyrgi also offers distinct points of interest on Chios. Mesta is a preserved medieval village and a listed monument. It is laid out like a castle, with its densely packed houses forming a protective outer wall. In Pyrgi, the Xysta are black-and-white geometric decorations on house façades. The village is also home to the well-preserved Byzantine church of Agioi Apostoloi, dating from the 14th century.
