Fiolítis is an old, agricultural village in the interior of Zakynthos, located in the Riza region. It is approximately 10 to 12 kilometres from Zakynthos’s central port. A paved road connects Fiolítis to the road network that runs through central Zakynthos and the Riza region. If you are considering accommodation in Fiolítis, you can treat its inland location, approximate distance from the port and your interest in local history as separate considerations.
Churches and History in Fiolítis
The present-day joint Ναός της Παναγίας Φιολίτισσας και του Αγίου Νικολάου των Σχίνων is considered Fiolítis’s most important monument. Its dual dedication recalls two former churches in the village, which were destroyed in the 1953 earthquakes. The present church building houses religious artworks saved from the earlier churches. These include the Baroque-style carved and gilded iconostasis from the Church of Saint Nicholas. The dedication and artwork thus point to the two predecessor buildings while preserving a specific work from the Church of Saint Nicholas.
The church of Panagia of Fiolítis has also been mentioned in sources since the early 16th century. The bell tower, built in 1885, belonged to the Church of Saint Nicholas in Fiolítis; after the 1953 earthquake, the 13.5-metre-high tower was relocated. Its year of construction, original association and subsequent relocation give the bell tower its own historical thread within the village’s history.
Another chapter concerns Giannis Klavdianos: the young man from the village of Fiolítis was sentenced to death by hanging in connection with the events of 1821. This episode adds a person and a specific fate from that period to the architectural and church history.
Zakynthos Beyond Fiolítis
For a look beyond the village, the wider destination of Zakynthos offers other points of interest, distinct from Fiolítis’s history. The Museum of Zakynthos displays works of the Cretan School, Cretan-Ionian icons and works of Ionian Naturalism from the 15th to the 19th century. On the ground floor of the Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians, the mausoleum has housed the remains of the national poets Andreas Kalvos and Dionysios Solomos since 1968. These museums have different focuses: one is a collection spanning several artistic movements and centuries, while the other commemorates two poets.
Zakynthos also offers a variety of landscape attractions. The Blue Caves are in the Aspros Vrachos area at Cape Skinari. Lake Keri is a wetland protected under the Ramsar Convention, a Natura site and a nature reserve within the Zakynthos National Marine Park. The Keri Lighthouse is known for panoramic sunset views of the Ionian Sea and the Myzithres rocks. The island thus offers different natural and scenic perspectives, without these describing Fiolítis itself.
The Monastery of Agios Georgios sta Gremna in Volimes was founded in 1535. The area is also associated with Ladotyri cheese, which is made in dairies and home workshops and offered as a local product. The range offered by individual producers may change; check current availability if you are looking for it specifically. Another distinct planning point on Zakynthos is the port of Agios Nikolaos in Volimes, a seaport with a ferry connection to Kefalonia. If you are planning this crossing, check the current timetable.
