Hiking and cycling on Corfu
Northern Corfu is well suited to hiking and long walks thanks to its geological landscape; there are also many places to explore. The same travel area has cycling routes and mountain biking opportunities.
On Corfu, a different hiking landscape lies in the municipal unit of Achilleion: ancient paths wind through the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. The contrast between the geological landscape of northern Corfu and the wooded mountains in Achilleion offers two distinct nature experiences on Corfu. The villages of Corfu’s municipal unit of Achilleion also host numerous festivals and folk festivals, as well as cultural events organised by the municipality. The programme varies for individual events; if you are planning around a particular date, check the relevant event dates before travelling.
Corfu Town: World Heritage and museums
The Old Town of Corfu has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Together with its two fortresses, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Museum of Asian Art is located in Corfu’s Old Town. Its collection comprises more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. The museum can be reached from Corfu Port by bus route 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route. Check the timetable before travelling.
The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays the Gorgon Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. The pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated in 1911 near the Monastery of Aghioi Theodoroi. The museum was built primarily to exhibit this pediment. Here, the focus is on a specific archaeological work and its discovery, while the Museum of Asian Art has a geographically diverse collection.
In Corfu’s historic Old Town, Casa Parlante recreates the everyday life of the island’s nobility in the 19th century with moving figures and replica furnishings and interiors. Unlike a collection or a single archaeological work, the focus here is on a recreated world of everyday life.
More cultural and landscape highlights on Corfu
The permanent exhibition at the Kapodistrias Museum explores the history of Corfu, Europe and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor, using important artefacts and documents. Beside the museum, a lush garden on a hill offers views across Corfu’s landscape and over the island.
The Achilleion summer palace was built in Gastouri in 1892 in the Pompeian style. Mon Repos is set in a 258-acre park with numerous exotic, mature plants. The two places offer different highlights: a historic palace on the one hand, and a large park with diverse vegetation on the other.
