Perivoli can be defined by several specific, clearly distinct features: the small harbor of Kalyviótis, nearby beaches, and the Church of Panagía Pantokrátoras in a lush area with olive groves. Fishing boats moor at the harbor. This raises a specific question when choosing a destination: should the focus be more on the coast or on a religious site in a green setting? Corfu also offers distinctive cultural and landscape themes.

Harbor and beaches near Perivoli

Perivoli’s small harbor is called Kalyviótis; fishing boats moor there. Málta Beach is three kilometers from the village, west of Perivoli and near the Church of Agía Varvára. Kalyviótis Beach is close to Perivoli and looks out toward the mainland coast. The beaches can therefore be compared in concrete terms: Málta is defined by its distance and western location; at Kalyviótis, the view toward the mainland coast is the distinguishing feature. A clear sense of distance and a particular coastal outlook thus sit side by side.

Church and olive groves

The Church of Panagía Pantokrátoras is in a lush area with olive groves. This gives Perivoli a clearly defined cultural and landscape feature alongside its harbor and beaches. Travelers who want to consider religious sites and their surroundings as well as the coast when choosing a destination will find a different focus here than by the sea.

Corfu: urban history, museums and hiking trails

On Corfu, the focus shifts to a different scale: Corfu Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Alongside Perivoli’s coastal and landscape features, this offers an urban focus with a largely preserved historic fabric.

Corfu’s museums also offer different perspectives. The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. The Archaeological Museum of Corfu displays the Gorgoneion Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis; the pediment was created in 585 BC and excavated near the Aghioi Theodoroi Monastery in 1911. A collection of objects from several regions and a specifically dated archaeological work thus offer contrasting approaches to cultural history.

A 2023 description mentions a digital guide to the Old Town that provides residents and visitors with information and high-quality audiovisual material about more than 80 sights. Check whether the guide is available before your trip. The Museum of Asian Art can be reached from Corfu Port on bus line 2, on the Mantouki–Kanoni route; check the timetable before traveling.

Corfu also has specific points of interest for hikers. In the municipal unit of Achilleion, ancient paths wind through the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. The 180-kilometer Corfu Trail passes through several settlements; Benitses is one of its 13 overnight-stop locations. The information highlights different features: paths through wooded mountains on the one hand, and a long route through several settlements on the other.
