A footbridge across the Halikiopoulos Lagoon connects Perama with Kanoni. Perama also has small beaches where you can swim. These are two practical points to consider when choosing where to stay: crossing the lagoon and spending time by the water. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Perama, first consider how much of your trip you want to devote to these experiences. Corfu also offers places to visit on longer stays.

Perama: Bridge, Beaches and Routes

The bridge is a pedestrian connection between Perama and Kanoni, crossing the Halikiopoulos Lagoon. The small beaches in the village offer something different: swimming is possible here. A route near Perama also leads to Gastouri. This means you can factor in a crossing on foot, time by the water, and a route with Gastouri as its destination as distinct options when planning your trip.

Bus route 6 is also useful for getting around: it goes to Perama and terminates in the Tsaki Benitson area. Check the current route and timetable before travelling. This lets you consider the bus connection as a separate planning point, without confusing it with the footbridge or the route to Gastouri.

Corfu: Old Town and Museums

On Corfu, the Old Town offers a striking cultural contrast to the experiences in Perama. Its historic urban fabric is almost entirely preserved, with buildings dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A digital guide to the Old Town is intended for residents and visitors, and supplements information on more than 80 sights within the town with high-quality audiovisual material. Check whether the guide is available before your trip.

The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town houses more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. From Corfu Port, you can reach the museum on bus route 2, which runs between Mantouki and Kanoni; check the current timetable before travelling. At the Archaeological Museum of Corfu, the Gorgon Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis takes centre stage. The museum was built primarily to display this pediment: it was created in 585 BC and excavated near the Aghioi Theodoroi Monastery in 1911.

Casa Parlante in the Old Town offers a different perspective: using moving figures and recreated furnishings, it brings to life the daily life of the island’s aristocracy in the 19th century. Together with the Asian art collection and the archaeological exhibits, it offers a range of different ways to explore the history and culture of Corfu.

Landscapes and Routes on Corfu

For hiking, ancient routes in the Achilleion municipal unit lead through the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna. The 180-kilometre Corfu Trail covers a larger area and passes through several settlements; Benitses is one of its 13 overnight stops. When planning your hike, you can weigh up whether local mountain routes or the 180-kilometre Corfu Trail through several settlements better suits the scale of hike you have in mind.

The Achilleion summer palace was built in Gastouri in 1892 in the Pompeian style. The villages of the Achilleion municipal unit also host numerous festivals and local celebrations, as well as cultural events organised by the municipality. If you would like such events to shape your stay, check the dates for your travel period.

Mon Repos offers more green scenery: the estate is set in a 258-acre park with numerous exotic, mature plants. At the Kapodistrias Museum, a lush garden on the hill complements the museum visit; from there, the view stretches across Corfu’s landscape and over the island. Through artefacts and documents, the museum’s permanent exhibition explores the history of Corfu, Europe and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor.
