Chlomos is defined by an organically developed village centre: labyrinthine narrow streets and two small squares, Pano Foro and Kato Foro, shape the village’s character. If you are looking for a destination with a winding layout and small squares, Chlomos offers a specific example.

Corfu: Old Town and Museums

Corfu’s Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Together with the two fortresses, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A digital guide is designed for residents and visitors and offers high-quality audiovisual material on more than 80 sights within the city. Check whether the guide is available before your trip.

The museums offer different cultural highlights. The Museum of Asian Art in the Old Town contains more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas and Central Asia. The Archaeological Museum displays the Gorgon-Medusa pediment from the great Temple of Artemis. It was created in 585 BC and excavated near the Monastery of Aghioi Theodoroi in 1911; the museum was built primarily to display it. Casa Parlante, meanwhile, recreates everyday life among the island’s nobility in the 19th century, using moving figures and reproduced furnishings in the historic Old Town.

The Museum of Asian Art can be reached from Corfu Port by bus line 2 on the Mantouki–Kanoni route. Check the timetable before travelling. This lets you factor the journey into your visit without relying on a particular departure time.

Hiking Trails and Landscapes on Corfu

In the municipal unit of Achilleion, ancient paths lead through the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. The Corfu Trail offers a different scale: it is 180 kilometres long, passes through several settlements and includes Benitses among its 13 overnight-stop locations. The old mountain paths and the long-distance trail’s stages therefore offer different approaches to trip planning: individual hiking routes contrast with a trail that connects several settlements.

Gardens and green spaces also offer different perspectives on Corfu. Mon Repos is set in a 258-acre park with numerous exotic, long-established plants. At the Kapodistrias Museum, a lush garden on a hill offers views of Corfu’s landscape and across the island. Through important artefacts and documents, the museum’s permanent exhibition explores the history of Corfu, Europe and Greece through the life of Greece’s first governor.

History and Events

The Achilleion summer palace was built in Gastouri in 1892 in the Pompeian style. The villages in the municipal unit of Achilleion also host numerous festivals and folk celebrations, as well as cultural events organised by the municipality. Specific programmes vary, so check before your trip whether any events coincide with your dates. For planning purposes, historic sites, hiking trails and events offer different themes for a trip to Corfu.
